Track & Field Sweeps Hammer at LSU, Clocks Fast Times at Stanford

3/29/2024 | Track and Field

BATON ROUGE, La. / PALO ALTO, Calif. – Ole Miss track & field swept both the men's and women's hammer amid several other impressive performances at Day One of LSU's Battle on the Bayou on Friday, while the Rebel distance squads turned in some fast times – including a school record – at the Stanford Invitational late Friday night and into Saturday morning.

All-American sophomore Tarik Robinson-O'Hagan – fresh off being named the SEC Co-Men's Field Athlete of the Week – got right back to work at LSU with another victory in the hammer on Friday. Robinson-O'Hagan won on his sixth-round toss of 71.53m/234-08, besting runner-up Eli Winter by nearly 16 feet. Robinson-O'Hagan was consistent on Friday as well, with all four of his legal throws traveling at least 229 feet, three beyond 230 and two beyond 234.

He was joined by several career days from his teammates in the hammer final. Senior transfer Jake Dalton set a new PR for the third time in as many meets as a Rebel, finishing fourth at 65.94m/216-04. That distance puts him into a tie for No. 3 in Ole Miss history, and this season it currently sits No. 3 in the SEC, No. 6 in the East Region and No. 19 in the NCAA overall.

Junior Costen Campion launched a five-foot PR of 64.07m/210-02 to finish seventh (No. 7 Ole Miss history), with redshirt sophomore Mason Hickel not far off in eighth on a four-foot best of his own at 63.31m/207-08 (No. 8 Ole Miss history).

In the women's hammer, All-American senior Jasmine Mitchell led the charge for the Rebels for the second week in a row. Mitchell won on Friday at 66.32m/217-07 after finishing as the top collegian at home in last week's Ole Miss Classic, which featured the top four throws in the United States this season.

Fellow senior Jalani Davis improved again as the runner-up, tossing a new season-best 66.10m/216-10. That throw currently ranks Davis No. 2 in the SEC behind Mitchell, as well as No. 3 in the East Region and No. 5 in the NCAA.

Freshman Skylar Soli finished fourth after unleashing a mammoth 10-foot improvement to 61.61m/202-01. That throw ranks her No. 6 in Ole Miss history, and it also makes her only the seventh Rebel woman to ever break 200 feet in the hammer – the first as a true freshman.

Sophomore Gabrielle Matthews had a career day of her own on the track, but in an event she had never run outdoors as a Rebel prior to Friday. Matthews finished third overall in a stacked women's 200-meter dash field that featured Olympians and collegians alike, clocking in at a wind-legal 23.15 (+2.0).

That time smashes her indoor 200-meter PR of 23.72, and it launches her up into a tie for fifth all-time at Ole Miss outdoors. This season, Matthews currently ranks No. 7 in the SEC, No. 8 in the East Region and No. 12 in the NCAA. Last week in Oxford, Matthews won her marquee event – the 400-meter hurdles – at 1:00.46.

Late Friday night at Stanford, Ole Miss senior Dereck Elkins took down the school record in the 10K following a massive career-best performance. Elkins dropped nearly two full minutes from his prior best of 30:37.31 from the 2023 SEC Championships, today finishing 10th in Section 2 at a blistering 28:44.87. That time bests Ben Savino's prior record of 28:50.64 also set at Stanford last March.

Sophomore Aiden Britt nearly took down that record as well in his first collegiate 10K race, finishing 14th in that same section at a blazing 28:52.35. That time now ranks Britt No. 3 in Ole Miss history, and it makes Elkins and Britt just the third and fourth Rebels to ever break 29 minutes in the 10K, respectively – with all four coming within the last calendar year and all four coming at the Stanford Invitational.

Senior transfer Jack Meijer also clocked a top-10 time in his collegiate 10K debut overall and his outdoor debut for the Rebels, finishing 37th in the invitational section at 29:27.43 – good for No. 10 in Ole Miss history.

In the men's 5K, indoor record holder and SEC Indoor 5K silver medalist Toby Gillen opened his outdoor season with an excellent race of his own. Gillen was the runner-up in the invitational section at 13:39.66, good for No. 4 in Ole Miss history, as well as No. 1 in the SEC and No. 7 in the NCAA so far this season. Indoors, Gillen broke the Ole Miss record at 13:28.81.

Ole Miss received two additional strong 5K races in that same invitational section from seniors Cruz Gomez in sixth (13:49.13, PR, No. 6 Ole Miss history) and Cole Bullock in seventh (13:49.46, outdoor debut).

Earlier in the evening, the Rebel women also had a handful of notable 5K performances. Sophomores Sophie Baumann and Sarah Schiffmann clocked top-15 all-time marks in Section 3 as part of their first collegiate outdoor 5K races, with Baumann finishing as the runner-up at 16:07.04 (No. 7 Ole Miss history), and Schiffmann in 11th at 16:25.35 (No. 12 Ole Miss history).

On Friday morning, junior Beth Arentz dropped 41 seconds off her 5K PR in Section 4, finishing third at 16:26.78 (No. 13 Ole Miss history).

Ole Miss closes competition at LSU on Saturday, with the Battle on the Bayou resuming at 10 a.m. CT with the women's discus and men's shot put.
