Track & Field Honors Seniors, Alums to Conclude Joe Walker Invite
4/6/2024 | Track and Field
OXFORD, Miss. – Ole Miss track & field won five more event titles amid a day full of celebration to conclude the 2024 Joe Walker Invite on a gorgeous Saturday at the Ole Miss Track & Field Complex.
It was a busy weekend of activity all around the track, but the centerpieces of the weekend – the Senior Day ceremony and a pair of recognitions for longtime Rebel head coach Joe Walker and his 1984 SEC runner-up men's team – highlighted another great day of competition by the Ole Miss squads.
Included in those 30 seniors honored on Saturday were two-time NCAA Champion Jalani Davis, who claimed another victory on the season today in the shot put. Davis took the crown at 17.58m/57-08.25, but the story of the day was how close freshman standout Akaoma Odeluga got to catching the reigning U.S. bronze medalist Davis.
Odeluga let one fly 17.37m/57-0 on her third attempt, a two-foot PR that stands as the world U20 lead for 2024. That mark also registers Odeluga as the No. 7 performer among all U20 athletes in United States history, as well as already placing her fourth in Ole Miss history and as the best Rebel freshman ever in the event.
This season, Odeluga leads all SEC freshmen, ranks second nationally among freshmen, and ranks No. 3 in the SEC and No. 7 in the NCAA overall.
Fellow freshman and indoor All-American Mensi Stiff had a strong day as well, finishing fifth at an outdoor PR of 16.45m/53-11.75 – moving her to No. 8 in school history.
In the men's shot put, indoor NCAA champ and sophomore Tarik Robinson-O'Hagan remained undefeated this outdoor season following another dominant performance. Robinson-O'Hagan won on his second attempt heave of 20.46m/67-01.50, besting professional Jordan West by nearly 3.5 feet in the process.
Robinson-O'Hagan's field series remained just as impressive overall, with all three of his legal throws eclipsing 20 meters. He has now broken 20 meters 11 times in the last six weeks after only doing so once in his career prior, and today marked his second straight field series with multiple 20-meter throws – his first time doing so in back-to-back meets.
Ole Miss also swept the triple jumps on Saturday, including a top-three sweep in the women's edition.
Senior transfer Eni Akinniyi continued to lead the group, jumping near her season-best at a winning leap of 12.45m/40-10.25 (+1.6). All three Rebels were beyond 40 feet, with Kayla Jemison finishing as the runner-up at an all-conditions PR of 12.35m/40-06.25 (+2.7) – No. 10 in Ole Miss history – and Kyla McLaurin in third at a season-best 12.26m/40-02.75 (+1.7).
In the men's triple jump, senior Gavin Nembhard took the crown on a season-best 14.96m/49-1 (+0.4) – just two centimeters off his outdoor career-best.
Sophomore Arvesta Troupe claimed his second high jump victory in three tries this outdoor season, winning today at 2.09m/6-10.25. Junior transfer Guy Bond also cleared that height to take third on total misses, which stands as an Ole Miss career-best that ranks him No. 10 in school history outdoors.
On the track, the Rebels notched a pair of runner-up finishes to close the day. Senior transfer Akilah Lewis finished second in her 100-meter dash debut for 2024, clocking in at 11.79 (-0.4). In the men's 4x400-meter relay, the Rebel middle distance quartet of Carson Turner, Jonathan Stock, Chase Rose and Cade Flatt took second in a thrilling finish, running the fastest time at Ole Miss since 2014 at 3:10.71.
With the home competition season now in the books, the Rebels return to the road, next week heading to Florida's high-powered Tom Jones Memorial. Competition runs April 12-13 in Gainesville.
