Track & Field’s Sprinters Lead Fast Conclusion to Tom Jones Memorial

4/13/2024 | Track and Field

GAINESVILLE, Fla. – Another pair of impressive performances by the Rebel sprinters led Ole Miss track & field to a successful conclusion at Florida's Tom Jones Memorial on Saturday.

An Ole Miss women's record came tumbling down for the second time in as many days, this time from the Rebel 4x100-meter relay. The quartet of senior Jahniya Bowers, senior McKenzie Long, sophomore Gabrielle Matthews and senior Akilah Lewis passed the stick in a blazing 43.31 in their first race together this season, which was good for seventh overall and fifth among collegiate teams on Saturday.

That time takes down the previous Ole Miss record of 43.43 set at the SEC Outdoor Championships last spring by the foursome of Long, Matthews, Jayda Eckford and Ariyonna Augustine. This season, that 43.31 today ranks sixth in the NCAA – with today's competition at Florida featuring five of those top-six times nationally.

That leadoff leg by Bowers was just the beginning of an excellent day for the Rebel senior, who turned in a career-best performance in the 100-meter dash to close competition for Ole Miss. Bowers finished fourth overall and won the third heat at a wind-legal PR of 11.15 (-0.2), which moves her to No. 2 in Ole Miss history as well as No. 15 in the NCAA this season. Bowers is now one of just three Rebels to ever break 11.20 in the 100-meter dash – one of whom is her teammate and Ole Miss record holder, McKenzie Long.

Other strong races on the track Saturday included a season-best by Ahmad Young Jr. in the prelim of the 110-meter hurdles invite at 13.66 (+2.5) in sixth place, and an 11th place finish by Chase Rose in the 800-meter at 1:48.19 – which exactly ties his PR from the Joe Walker Invite last week.

In the field, Ole Miss claimed one event title courtesy of All-American sophomore Tarik Robinson-O'Hagan in the men's hammer invite. Robinson-O'Hagan topped out at 67.69m/222-1 today, improving him to 4-0 in the event this outdoor season. Ole Miss also claimed a top-three finish in the invitational section of the women's hammer courtesy of All-American senior Jasmine Mitchell, whose best Saturday measured 65.77m/215-9.

Other notable field results for the Rebels on Saturday included: a runner-up finish by freshman Mensi Stiff in the women's discus (50.77m/166-7); a pair of season-bests and fifth-place finishes in the triple jumps by Eni Akinniyi in the women's (12.60m/41-04.25; +2.7) and Iangelo Atkinstall-Daley in the men's (15.38m/50-05.50; +0.2); and a season-best by Samara McConnell in the invitational section of the women's pole vault (4.04m/13-3).

Ole Miss now turns its attention to Arkansas' John McDonnell Invitational, which will be held in Fayetteville next week on April 18-19.
