Track & Field Closes LSU’s Battle on the Bayou in Impressive Fashion

3/30/2024 | Track and Field

BATON ROUGE, La. – Ole Miss track & field received several national caliber performances across the board following a successful final day at LSU's Battle on the Bayou on Saturday.

Two-time NCAA Champion and Rebel senior Jalani Davis once again proved herself as one of the best all-around throwers in the nation, winning both the shot put and discus on Saturday in demonstrative fashion.

Davis opened the day with a four-foot PR in the discus that traveled a school record 57.54m/188-09 for the victory. That throw broke Olympian Raven Saunders' 2016 record of 56.85m/186-06, and currently that throw by Davis ranks second in the SEC, third in the East Region, fifth in the NCAA and No. 9 among all American throwers this season.

Davis followed that up with a powerful showing in the shot put a few hours later, winning at a meet record and season-best 18.54m/60-10 in what turned out to be a superb competition. Davis was one of two throwers beyond 60 feet and one of four beyond 17 meters, but she was the lone thrower to break 60 feet multiple times in the series. All three of Davis' legal throws traveled at least 18 meters, and this marked only the second time in her career that she has broken 60 feet twice in the same series.

That winning mark by Davis extends her current lead on the NCAA and U.S. leaderboards, and it also ranks second worldwide so far this outdoor season.

Ole Miss had a heavy presence in the women's shot put final, receiving a season-best performance from senior Jasmine Mitchell in fifth place (16.92m/55-06.25), as well as two career days from freshmen Akaoma Odeluga in sixth (16.74m/54-11.25, PR, No. 6 Ole Miss history) and Mensi Stiff in eighth (16.35m/53-07.75, outdoor PR, No. 8 Ole Miss history).

Stiff also made the final alongside Davis in the discus, finishing eighth at an eight-foot collegiate best of 51.50m/168-11 – already moving her to No. 6 in school history.

All-American senior McKenzie Long stole the show at the end of the meet, however, running in one of the fastest – if slightly windy – 100-meter races worldwide so far this outdoor season. Long finished third overall in a heat that featured three professional runners and a bevy of the top sprinters in the NCAA, clocking in at 10.89 (+2.6) in her 2024 outdoor debut.

That time marks the second sub-11 in any conditions for Long, who almost exactly one year ago today broke onto the national scene with a blazing but windy 10.80 (+3.5) in the prelims at the 2023 Texas Relays. The next day, she bested even the professionals with a wind-legal 11.00 (+0.2) in the final.

This season on the world all-conditions list, that 10.89 by Long ranks No. 3, and it currently ranks No. 2 on the NCAA qualifying lists – which allow up to 4.0 meters per second wind readings.

Fellow senior Jahniya Bowers also opened her outdoor campaign in the 100-meter dash in that very same heat, clocking in at 11.33 (+2.6) and finishing 12th overall. That time already makes her the No. 5 performer in Ole Miss history, and Bowers is now only the sixth Rebel woman to ever break 11.40 in any conditions.

Sophomore and indoor national champion Tarik Robinson-O'Hagan remained undefeated in the shot put this outdoor season, winning Saturday on a meet record of 20.15m/66-01.50. Robinson-O'Hagan broke the 20-meter plateau twice today, giving him eight such throws in the last month since the SEC Indoor Championships. Today also marks his first career field series with multiple 20-meter throws outdoors, and only his second overall alongside a whopping four at the NCAA Indoor Championships.

Redshirt sophomore Mason Hickel also made the final, finishing seventh at a PR 17.53m/57-06.25 to improve upon his spot at No. 6 in Ole Miss history.

On the track, the Rebel 800-meter units both had highly productive days in their first full day of racing this outdoor season. Senior Marcus Dropik continued to chop time off his 800 personal best, finishing third overall at a new career-best 1:47.82. That time ranks him No. 13 in Ole Miss history outdoors, and as of now it sits at No. 5 in the NCAA and No. 4 in the SEC this season.

Other Rebel men's 800-meter runners with PRs included junior Chase Rose in eighth (1:48.75), redshirt sophomore Gabe Scales in 13th (1:50.27) and sophomore Carson Turner in 14th (1:50.31).

In the women's 800-meter, junior Madison Hulsey broke through with an overall PR 2:06.86, finishing 11th overall and moving up to No. 7 in the Ole Miss record books outdoors. Junior Jo-Lauren Keane also made the top-15 lists all-time at Ole Miss, finishing 16th overall at 2:07.91 in her outdoor Rebel debut – good for No. 11 in school history.

Other notable performances from Saturday include Iangelo Atkinstall-Daley in the men's triple jump (second, 15.25m/50-00.50), Arvesta Troupe in the men's high jump (third, 2.10m/6-10.75), Ahmad Young Jr. in the men's 110-meter hurdles (seventh, 13.83/+2.0, SB) and the women's 4x100-meter relay of Bowers, Long, Gabrielle Matthews and Hannah Foxx (fourth, 44.04).

Ole Miss now returns home to honor its senior class in its final home meet of the season, the 2024 Joe Walker Invite. Competition is set to run April 5-6 at the Ole Miss Track & Field Complex, and the meet will air live on SECN+.
