Men’s Golf Tied for 5th at Cabo Collegiate, La Sasso Earns 2nd Place Finish

3/5/2024 | Men's Golf

LOS CABOS, Mexico – Ole Miss sophomore Michael La Sasso was the key player in Ole Miss' final round at the 2024 Cabo Collegiate, as he shot 7-under on the day. La Sasso's persistence earned him a 2nd place finish, just one stroke shy of the crown, inside a stacked field that included 18 of the top 50 amateurs in the world.

La Sasso began his final round shooting even through his first nine holes but turned to a different level as he shot 7-under on his final stretch at the Twin Dolphin Club. The Raleigh, North Carolina, native made five birdies and an eagle in his last nine holes to launch him 12 spots up the leaderboard and earn his third top-5 finish of the season.

"Golf just came easy today," La Sasso stated regarding his standout round of the day. "I was really thankful that [Assistant Coach] Emerson [Newsome] was with me. We had a blast coming through the final holes, kept it light and just tried to enjoy the moment and the experience knowing we were in Cabo."

Overall, Ole Miss was able to earn its third top-5 finish of the season of tied for 5th at 857 (+5) overall. The Rebels finished above six teams ranked inside the top 50.

"What an incredible round of golf by Mike today," said head coach Chris Malloy. "He really put the team on his back and helped move us up the leaderboard. We have a quick turnaround before we head to our next event, so we will have to get back and make some adjustments. I look forward to getting back into the competition."

Tied with each other for 30th at 4-over overall were Rebel duo Cameron Tankersley and Tim Tillmanns. Tankersley shot 1-over on the day while Tillmanns shot 5-over.

Tom Fischer shot just 1-over in his final round, earning him tied for 38th at 6-over overall.

Patton Samuels concluded his time in Cabo tied for 70th at 17-over.

Ole Miss will return to Oxford and have a quick turnaround before heading to the Seminole Intercollegiate from March 11-12 in Tallahassee, Florida.
