Paige Smith Homers Twice in 9-0 Midweek Victory at Memphis

3/5/2024 | Softball

MEMPHIS, Tenn. – Paige Smith blasted two home runs, and Jalia Lassiter drove in four runs on three hits as Ole Miss softball scored in every inning in a 9-0 midweek victory against Memphis on Tuesday night.

The top of the order for the Rebels (15-5, 0-0 SEC) did the majority of the damage at the plate, collecting five of the team's eight hits. Ole Miss also showed patience on offense, taking advantage of nine free passes and stealing five bases. In the circle, Catelyn Riley and Brianna Lopez combined on the shutout. Riley earned the victory, going 4.0 strong innings and striking out five batters. Lopez slammed the door, tossing the final two frames.

Smith and the Rebels struck first in the opening frame. Jaden Pone worked the count full and walked before stealing second and advancing to third on a throwing error. Smith took a 2-1 pitch for a ride, blasting a two-run shot over the wall in left-center.

Ole Miss added two more runs in the second. With a pair of runners on, Lassiter chopped a single back over the outstretched glove of the pitcher to score Taylor Malvin. Then Smith added another with the bases loaded, plating Angelina DeLeon on a sacrifice fly.

After a quiet first inning, Memphis threatened in the second. Two Tiger hits and a walk loaded the bases with one out, but Riley and the defense worked out of the jam unscathed.

Pinch hitting in the top of the third, Riley extended the lead to 5-0 with a sacrifice fly as Jamie Mackay crossed the plate. The following inning, Smith added another run with her second home run of the night, a solo shot that looked nearly identical off the bat to her first of the night.

Up 6-0 in the fifth, Lassiter continued to add to the lead. The sophomore tacked on another run with a base hit to center to increase Ole Miss' advantage. At the plate again with the bases loaded the very next inning, Lassiter brought the run rule into effect. She drove a ball right back up the middle for her third hit and fourth RBI of the game, tying her career high in both categories.

Lopez took over in the circle in the bottom of the fifth inning. She worked around a one-out walk in the frame before coming out to finish things off in the sixth with a swinging strikeout.

The Rebels are back at home March 8-10, welcoming No. 17 Mississippi State to Oxford for a three-game series to open SEC play.
