Men’s Tennis Set for 2024 SEC Championship

BATON ROUGE, La.- The No. 12 seed Ole Miss men's tennis team is set to open the 2024 SEC Championship on Wednesday with the Rebels squaring off against the No. 13 seeded LSU Tigers.
The opening round for Ole Miss (12-14, 2-10 SEC) is scheduled for Wednesday, April 17 at 12 p.m CT. The match against the LSU Tigers (11-12, 1-11 SEC) and the entirety of the SEC Championship will be held at the LSU Tennis Complex in Baton Rouge running from April 17-21.

Rebels in the Rankings
Nikola Slavic remains the lone Rebel ranked in singles play, slotting into the No. 47 position. The Stockholm, Sweden native improved his overall record to 18-10 this last weekend in Tuscaloosa. Slavic pairs with fellow senior Lukas Engelhardt to hold down the ITA Doubles Rankings for the Rebels. The senior duo settles into the No. 68 spot in this week's ITA rankings.
Eyes on the Prize
The Rebels hold the No. 12 seed in this year's SEC tournament putting Ole Miss head to head with the No. 13 LSU Tigers for the play-in match of the 2024 SEC Championship. With a win Wednesday, the Rebels will advance to play No. 5 Texas A&M (18-9, 7-5 SEC) on Thursday at 6 p.m CT. If Ole Miss captures the win against the Aggies they will square off against the No. 4 seeded Auburn (17-9, 7-5 SEC) on Friday at 6 p.m CT.
With a victory against the Auburn Tigers, Ole Miss would advance into the SEC Semifinals for the first time since 2015. A Saturday win would punch the Rebels' ticket to Championship Sunday which is set to take place on Sunday at 1 p.m CT on the SEC Network.
Niko Named to SEC Community Service Team
Ole Miss men's tennis senior, Nikola Slavic was one of 13 student-athletes to receive a place on the SEC Community Service Team, the Southeastern Conference announced last Thursday.
The SEC Community Service Team serves as an annual effort by the Southeastern Conference to highlight the accomplishments of student-athletes beyond the field of competition. Through his active engagement with the Special Olympics on Ole Miss' campus Slavic has served as a volunteer attending all competition play and encourages all athletes to reach their full potential through sports and realize the benefits of play-confidence, fun, and strength. Slavic has also worked with multiple Mississippi organizations including Feed the Sip, Adopt a Basket, the Book and Bears initiative and more. The Senior Sensation has not only left his mark on the Ole Miss men's tennis program, but furthermore he has impacted the Oxford community and the state of Mississippi.
Going for the Hat-trick
The Rebels defeated the LSU Tigers, 4-2, for Ole Miss' first ranked win of the 2024 season. The Rebels took the doubles point away from LSU with senior duo Niko Slavic and Lukas Engelhardt securing the win over LSU's 51st-ranked doubles pairing. Slavic and Engelhardt stayed hot in singles, putting the Rebels up on the Tigers, 3-0, in straight-set matches. John Hallquist Lithen sealed the deal for Ole Miss with a 7-5, 6-4 win at the second position to earn the Rebels the win over the Tigers.
Last year, Ole Miss beat LSU in the first round of the 2023 SEC Championship. In a hard-fought battle after dropping the doubles point, the Rebels came back to secure the 4-3 win to advance to the second round of the tournament.
Ole Miss looks to secure its fourth straight win over the Tigers in match one of the SEC Championship on Wednesday, April 16 at 12 p.m CT.
Team Profile: LSU
The LSU Tigers are led by head coach Danny Bryan who has been with the Tigers for two seasons and has an overall record of 25-23 since taking over the reins in Louisiana. LSU has an overall record of 11-12 (1-11 SEC) on the books for the 2023-24 season. Julien Penzlin leads the Tigers in singles with a record of 20-11. Additionally, Chen Dongs doubles with Penzlin to boast a 13-2 overall doubles record on the season.
