Miscues Costly as Softball Drops Series Opener at No. 7 Texas A&M

COLLEGE STATION, Texas – Miscues proved costly as No. 7 Texas A&M took advantage of five Ole Miss errors to take the series opener 5-2 on Friday night at Davis Diamond.
The Rebels (25-20, 3-13 SEC) committed three errors resulting in five unearned runs for the Aggies (35-9, 13-6 SEC). Angelina DeLeon got Ole Miss on the board with her first home run of the season, a two-run shot in the fifth.
Both pitchers dueled through the first three innings. Annie Orman made a leaping catch to end the second after Texas A&M threaten with a two-out double. The following inning, Grace Sparks froze the Aggie batter with two runners in scoring position.
Ole Miss threatened in the fourth after Jaden Pone walked to start the inning. She moved all the way to third, but the Rebels couldn't get bring her in for the first run of the game.
In the bottom half, Ole Miss turned to Catelyn Riley out of the bullpen with two runners on base. The Rebels nearly escaped the inning unscathed but a passed ball allowed Texas A&M to grab a 2-0 lead.
DeLeon and the Rebels answered back in the fifth, tying the game at two. Following a leadoff walk, the Valley Springs, California, native launched a two-run shot to left off the scoreboard to knot things up. Looking for more, Ole Miss loaded the bases with two outs but couldn't find the clutch hit to take the lead.
Texas A&M retook the lead on a pair of errors in the bottom of the fifth. With two in scoring position, a wild pitch on a strikeout allowed one run to come home and a throwing error brought in a second to put the Aggies back up 4-2. They added another insurance run in the sixth and retired Ole Miss in order in the seventh to close out the series opener.
The Rebels aim to even the series on Saturday, April 20, at 1 p.m. CT.
