Softball Drops Series to No. 7 Texas A&M

4/21/2024 | Softball

COLLEGE STATION, Texas – Ole Miss softball dropped the final two games of the series against No. 7 Texas A&M on Sunday at Davis Diamond.

The Rebels (25-22, 3-15 SEC) fell 2-7 after resuming Saturday's rained-out contest and dropped the series finale 0-2 in a pitcher's duel.

GAME ONE | Ole Miss 2, Texas A&M 7
Mother nature played an impact on game two of the series, forcing Saturday's game to be halted and resumed on Sunday.

Texas A&M struck for three runs in the bottom of the first. Jalia Lassiter nearly robbed a leadoff home run that gave the Aggie a 1-0 lead. They added two more runs with aggressive baserunning to extend the lead to three runs before Furbush got out of the frame, and the game entered a rain delay.

After nearly a 45-minute gap in play, Furbush stepped into the batter's box to resume the top of the second. The senior helped her own cause, launching her seventh home run of the season to chip away at the deficit.

The Aggies scored one in the third, taking advantage of a throwing error and added three more in the fourth on a two-RBI single with the bases loaded and another throwing error.

With the rain picking back up, Ole Miss worked three walks to load the bases with two outs. Jaden Pone made the Aggies pay, ripping an RBI single back up the middle and bringing slugger Lexie Brady to the plate. The team leader in home runs, Brady, watched two balls before the umpire crew came together and decided to halt play at 3:37 p.m. CT and resume the game on Sunday.

Twenty hours and 25 minutes later, Brady dug back in at the dish to pick up where the Rebels left off. With a 2-0 count, Texas A&M started the resumed game with a pitching change, bringing in their ace to escape the jam.

Unable to capitalize after the delay, Ole Miss couldn't climb back into the contest, falling 2-7 to the Aggies.

GAME TWO | Ole Miss 0, Texas A&M 2
Locked in a pitcher's duel, Ole Miss was unable to string together hits against Texas A&M's ace, falling 0-2 in the series finale.

Ole Miss had an opportunity in the second to strike first after Brady reached on a double that was lost in the sun. She tagged up to get to third on a foul out but was unable to cross home for the Rebels.

In the bottom half of the second, Texas A&M used a walk and two singles to score the game's first run before Grace Sparks and the defense got out of the inning.

The Aggies kept Ole Miss quiet at the plate, only allowing one hit over the final 5.0 innings. Texas A&M added an insurance run in the bottom of the sixth on a wild pitch with the bases loaded to cushion the victory.

The Rebels are back in action on Tuesday, April 23, against Southern Miss. First pitch is set for 5 p.m. CT.
