Softball Takes Care of Business Against Southern Miss
4/23/2024 | Softball
OXFORD, Miss. – Angelina DeLeon and Lexie Brady went yard, lifting Ole Miss to a 7-3 victory over in-state foe Southern Miss on Tuesday night at the Ole Miss Softball Complex.
For Brady, it marked her team-leading 13th home run of the year, the third most by a Rebel in a single season in program history. DeLeon also launched her second longball of the season to cap off a two-hit night. In the circle, Grace Sparks struck out five over 3.2 innings of work out of the bullpen to improve to 6-1 on the season. Brianna Lopez slammed the door on the Golden Eagles to help the Rebels secure a 7-3 victory.
Southern Miss came out swinging, putting up a run in the opening frame. The Ole Miss defense minimized the damage to just one, thanks to an inning-ending double play. The Rebels responded in the bottom half of the first with three runs of their own. Jalia Lassiter walked, and Jaden Pone singled to put the first two baserunners on. An RBI groundout and a sacrifice fly helped Ole Miss take the lead before Brady added a third run with a solo shot to left to make it 3-1.
However, the Golden Eagles capitalized on a miscue in the second to tie the score back up. Ole Miss turned to Sparks in the circle to work out of the jam and keep the game level at 3-3. The sophomore settled in nicely and retired 10 of the next 12 batters she faced.
Looking to break through in the bottom of the fourth inning, the bottom of the order sparked a two-out rally. DeLeon and Ryan Starr rattled off back-to-back base hits and moved up a base on an error. Lassiter stepped to the plate and came through with a two-run single to put Ole Miss back on top 5-3.
DeLeon added a pair of insurance runs in the sixth with her second home run in the last four games. The junior crushed the 2-0 pitch over the wall to make it a 7-3 ballgame before Lopez went out for the seventh and quickly set down the side to cap off the victory.
The Rebels are back in action April 26-28 as they host Auburn for Senior Weekend.
