Men’s Golf Begins SEC Championship in Eighth Place

4/24/2024 | Men's Golf

ST. SIMONS ISLAND, Ga. – The No. 5 Ole Miss men's golf team concluded day one at the SEC Championship shooting 1-over in the first round to put the Rebels in eighth place heading into round two.

The Rebels started the day bright and early as the leadoff group paired with Vanderbilt and Auburn at the par-70 Sea Island Golf Club. Ole Miss made 11 birdies and went 4-under on par three through its first 18 holes of the SEC Championship. The Rebels look to capitalize in round two on Thursday to improve from its eighth place. After three rounds of stroke play, Ole Miss must be in the top eight to qualify for match play.

"We always talk about adversity and being able to handle it when we experience it," said head coach Chris Malloy. "Well, these guys were tested today and battled their tails off. They gave themselves a chance to still be in the mix for match play with two more stroke play rounds left. We need to make a little run tomorrow and continue to climb up the leaderboard."

Two Rebels settled into the top 10 after round one. Kye Meeks ended the day tied for 4th, shooting a 67 (-3). The Walnut, Mississippi, native captured 15 pars and three birdies, going bogey-free through the first 18 holes of play.

Cameron Tankersley joined Meeks in the top 10, tied for 8th after shooting a 68 (-2). Tankersley secured 14 pars, three birdies and a bogey-free back nine during his first round at Sea Island.

Tom Fischer played steady golf, finishing the day even for par. The sophomore made par on twelve holes and earned three birdies on the day. Fischer is tied for 27th after round one.

Sophomore Michael La Sasso dealt with a health issue during round one but hopes to be back in action soon. He was replaced in the lineup by Patton Samuels.

Both Tim Tillmanns and Samuels captured a lone birdie in their first round. Tillmanns and Samuels ended the day both tied for 63rd place with a 76 (+6).

Ole Miss will continue its competition in the Peach State on Thursday morning where it will tee off, beginning at 7:50 a.m. CT. The Rebels will be paired with Arkansas and Alabama for round two.
