Track & Field Impresses in Wrap-Up of Drake Relays, LSU Invite

4/27/2024 | Track and Field

DES MOINES, Iowa / BATON ROUGE, La. – Ole Miss track & field received a huge event win on an elite stage at the Drake Relays, as well as a bevvy of excellent performances at the LSU Invitational to close out the final weekend of the regular season on Saturday.

At Drake, Ole Miss senior and two-time NCAA Champion Jalani Davis only needed one throw to take victory in the deeply talented women's shot put invite – which, as part of the World Athletics Continental Tour will prove crucial for World Rankings points later this summer. Davis won by almost a foot in a field that featured Olympians, with her first attempt of the day traveling 18.23m/59-09.75. That throw held on as the best for all six rounds, giving Davis a signature win heading into the collegiate postseason and a busy summer ahead of the 2024 Summer Olympic Games in Paris.

Fellow All-American senior Jasmine Mitchell also will receive some credit for competing in the elite field, finishing eighth today at 15.90m/52-2. On the men's side, NCAA Champion and sophomore Tarik Robinson-O'Hagan had an equally as daunting a field, finishing eighth at 20.33m/66-08.50.

The remainder of the Rebel squad competed down in Baton Rouge on Saturday, and once again Ole Miss put up some fast times on the track.

Ole Miss was paced by two superb races in the women's 200-meter dash, which featured the first sub-23.00 duo in school history. All-American senior and two-time NCAA 200-meter runner-up McKenzie Long blew the field away yet again, setting the NCAA lead on her winning time of 22.21 (+2.2). That time is almost as fast as her wind-illegal 22.18 (+4.1) from Florida's Tom Jones Memorial two weeks ago, but today's +2.2 wind reading gets her on the NCAA qualifying leaderboard heading into the conference meet.

Sophomore Gabrielle Matthews continued to prove her versatility as well with another eye-opening performance in the 200-meter. She finished eighth overall at a wind-legal PR of 22.98 (+1.1), which moves her to No. 4 in Ole Miss history and currently into a tie for No. 18 in the NCAA this season. That performance makes her only the fourth Rebel woman to ever break 23 seconds in the 200-meters in any wind conditions, and it makes her and Long the lone Ole Miss teammates to ever do so at the same time – let alone the same meet.

Over in the 100-meter dash, senior Jahniya Bowers (fifth, 11.22/+2.8) and Akilah Lewis (15th, 11.54/+2.8; SB) put together strong outings, and all four of them – Bowers, Long, Matthews and Lewis – had another fast day as Ole Miss' 4x100-meter relay quartet. Those four passed the stick in 43.58 to finish fifth overall, clocking in as the sixth-fastest time in school history. Just two weeks ago, this team set the Ole Miss record at 43.31.

In the men's 110-meter hurdles, senior Ahmad Young Jr. had a career day of his own, finishing third at a PR time of 13.51 (+3.8). That improves upon his spot at No. 3 in Ole Miss history (which accepts up to a 4.0 wind reading), ahead of his prior wind-legal PR of 13.54 (+0.6) from the Virginia Challenge last spring. This season, Young currently ranks No. 7 in the SEC and No. 18 in the NCAA at his newest PR from today.

Redshirt junior Jo-Lauren Keane had a great day in the women's 800-meter as well, finishing fourth overall at an outdoor PR of 2:05.90. That moves her to No. 4 in Ole Miss history, leapfrogging teammate Madison Hulsey, who ran 2:05.99 at the Joe Walker Invite earlier this month. This marks the first duo of sub-2:06 women outdoors on the same team in Ole Miss history.

Ole Miss also had several excellent performances in the field, led by a school record from redshirt freshman Jake Railey in the javelin. He finished third overall today on a 15-foot improvement to 69.52m/228-1, taking down Colin Moleton's 2010 record of 227-5 from the NCAA Championships in the process.

Junior Iangelo Atkinstall-Daley had a huge wind at his back in the men's triple jump, but he was still able to get an NCAA wind-legal mark in after a great day of jumping. Atkinstall-Daley finished fourth overall at a wind-illegal 15.84m/51-11.75 (+4.5), but in the very next round got one in at 15.81m/51-10.50 (+3.7). That latter mark moves him into the No. 10 slot in Ole Miss history, as well as No. 4 in the SEC, No. 11 in the East Region and No. 17 in the NCAA this year.

Redshirt junior Drew O'Connor led the way for the Rebels in the men's pole vault, setting a new outdoor PR of 5.31m/17-5 as the runner-up. That height puts O'Connor into a tie for fifth all-time at Ole Miss outdoors, and it makes him the sixth Rebel to ever clear 17-5 outdoors. This season, O'Connor now ranks 19th in the East Region and fifth in the SEC.

Sophomore Logan Kelley had a season-best performance in fourth place at 5.16m/16-11 (No. 8 Ole Miss history), as did senior Samara McConnell in the women's pole vault in third place (4.06m/13-03.75).

Also notching a notable performance on Saturday was redshirt sophomore Mason Hickel, who finished fifth in the men's shot put at a half-foot PR of 17.73m/58-2 to improve upon his spot at No. 6 in Ole Miss history. He is now only the sixth Rebel man to ever clear 58 feet outdoors.

With the regular season now over, Ole Miss has next week off to prepare for the upcoming 2024 SEC Outdoor Championships, this year held at the University of Florida from May 9-11.
