Maddox’s Strong Start Gives Baseball Series Opening Win Over No. 2 Texas A&M

5/10/2024 | Baseball

BY JEFF ROBERSON

OXFORD, Miss. – Ole Miss scored two runs in the bottom of the eighth inning, and closer Connor Spencer got his seventh save of the season, facing three Aggies in the top of the ninth. The Rebels beat No. 2 Texas A&M 4-3 in game one of the series opener in Oxford Friday night.

In the bottom of the eighth, Andrew Fischer led off with a single up the middle, and he was able to move to second on a throwing error. Jackson Ross then doubled to score Fischer and tie the game 3-3.

After Ross moved to third on a Will Furniss ground out, Ethan Groff flew out to left to score Ross as the Rebels took a 4-3 lead. In the top of the ninth, Spencer was terrific and shut the Aggies down for the Ole Miss victory.

With the win, Ole Miss is 26-23 overall and 10-15 in Southeastern Conference play. Texas A&M falls to 41-9 and 16-9.

The Aggies were first to strike, scoring a run in the top of the first inning. A Jackson Appel single to left center plated Jace LaViolette who had reached on an error.

Texas A&M added a run in the top of the second on a two-out home run over the wall in right center by Kaeden Kent. It was 2-0 Aggies, but the Rebels would soon cut into that lead.

Ole Miss put a run on the board in the bottom of the second on a two-out solo homer by Judd Utermark over the wall in left center to trim the Aggie lead to 2-1 after two complete.

After a scoreless top of the third, as Rebel starter Riley Maddox continued to pitch well, Ole Miss tied the game in the bottom of the third. After Luke Hill walked and moved to second on an Fischer groundout, Ross singled up the middle to score Hill and tie the game 2-2. A Hayden Schott RBI single gave the visitors a 3-2 lead in the top of the fifth.

Wes Mendes (2-1) got the win in relief of Maddox as the freshman left-hander went two innings with four strikeouts, two walks, and no hits or runs, facing eight Aggies.

Maddox had gone six innings and pitched solidly, allowing two earned runs on six hits with seven strikeouts and three walks. Spencer threw 17 pitches in the ninth with a hit and two strikeouts.

Ole Miss' eight-hits night was paced by Ross and Hill with two hits each. Appel was 3-for-5 for A&M as the Aggies had seven hits.

Ole Miss and Texas A&M meet again Saturday at 4 p.m. The Sunday series finale is set for 5 p.m.
