Men’s Golf Completes Round One of NCAA Stanford Regional at Nine-Under

5/13/2024 | Men's Golf

STANFORD, Calif. – The No. 2 seed Ole Miss men's golf team came out focused and ready for competition at the NCAA Stanford Regional on the Stanford Golf Course, finishing the day with a 271 (-9) score and tied for fourth.

The Rebels collectively made 19 birdies and 58 pars on the day to contribute to their tie for fourth placement. They currently hold a six-stroke cushion within the top five, which they must maintain for the next 36 holes to advance to the NCAA Championship in Carlsbad, California.

Ole Miss was led by sophomore, Tom Fischer, who shot a flawless first round at 66 (-4). In the first postseason debut of his career, Fischer went bogey-free for all 18 holes while making four birdies on the day to achieve a tie for 7th placement heading into Round Two.

"They did a good job," said head coach Chris Malloy recalling the day. "[Michael La Sasso] has led us all year, so I actually viewed it as a positive that the one time he has an off day, these other guys were right there. To watch Mike get fired up by that and get energy from those guys picking up the slack, as a coach I thought that was really cool."

"Overall, I thought it was a good team effort. Everyone was in it. Certainly, Tom had a big round for us. Kye [Meeks] played well. But, we need to finish way stronger than we did. We really had it rolling there. In the last three holes, we could've picked apart a bit. You saw Illinois and Florida State went one way and we kind of went the other. We'll get back, practice, clean up a couple of those silly mistakes, and be better for it tomorrow."

Kye Meeks was another key contributor for Ole Miss on the day. Meeks, making his third career NCAA Regional appearance, went bogey-free for 14 consecutive holes while making five birdies. The Walnut, Mississippi, native ended Round One with a 67 (-3), his lowest round in his postseason career. Meeks will look to continue his momentum during Round Two, tied for 10th.

Cameron Tankersley and Tim Tillmanns both earned 69 (-1) first rounds and sit tied for 23rd. Their first round scores mark both their ninth rounds in 60s this season. Tankersley made three birdies during his first day, highlighted by two being back-to-back on Holes 11 and 12. Tillmanns made four birdies in his fourth career NCAA Regional appearance, including two consecutives on Holes 16 and 17.

Michael La Sasso rounded out the day for Ole Miss at 73 (+3). The All-SEC First Team pick had an off day on the Stanford Golf Course and looks to pick up during Round Two at tied for 54th.

Ole Miss will continue competition at The Farm tomorrow, teeing off beginning at 11:00 am CT in 11 minute increments off of Hole 10 and will be paired with Texas A&M and UCLA.
