Baseball Blasts Way to Series Opening Win Over Auburn
5/3/2024 | Baseball
AUBURN, Ala. – Ole Miss (24-21, 8-14 SEC) opened its series against Auburn (21-23, 3-19 SEC) with an 11-7 victory Friday night. It was the Rebels' first series-opening win since week five against South Carolina.
The middle of the order did most of the damage for the Rebels as Jackson Ross, Andrew Fischer, Will Furniss, Luke Hill, and Judd Utermark went a combined 11-for-23 with three home runs, nine RBI, and nine runs scored.
Ole Miss had eight extra-base hits in the game, their highest total since February 25 against High Point. Every Rebel in the lineup reached base at least once and five of the nine posted multi-hit games.
Riley Maddox earned the win on the mound, his first since March 19 against Southern Miss. The junior allowed just one earned run (four total) over five innings while striking out three batters. He allowed eight hits, but none of them went for extra bases and three were infield singles.
Rebel pitching held Auburn to just 2-for-12 with runners in scoring position and 5-for-24 with runners on base.
The Rebels got on the board quick as the second batter of the game, Ross, hit the first pitch he saw over the large wall in left field to make it 1-0.
Auburn tied the game at 1-1 in the second inning on a fielding error by Utermark. It was just his second error of the season and first since February 17 at Hawaii.
Ole Miss started to break things open in the third inning, scoring four runs on four hits and a walk. Eli Berch opened the inning with an infield single and moved to second on a groundout. After Ethan Groff walked, Ross knocked in his second run of the game with a double down the left field line.
That brought Fischer to the plate, who hit an absolute missile of a home run over the buildings in right field to make it 5-1 Rebels.
The Tigers scored three runs in the fourth, two of them unearned on Ole Miss' second error of the game, to cut the Rebel lead to just one.
Ole Miss immediately answered in the top of the fifth however, using five-straight two-out hits to score four more runs. Ross started things with a single to center field and moved to third on a double from Fischer. Furniss joined the home run party with a three-RBI shot of his own to straight-away center field to make it 8-4. Hill and Utermark hit back-to-back doubles to add another run to the Rebel lead.
Gunnar Dennis, JT Quinn, and Mason Morris all turned in good outings out of the bullpen. With Ole Miss leading 10-5, Quinn came in with a runner on in the eighth and struck out three-straight after issuing a walk.
The Rebels added another run in the ninth as Utermark doubled and Treyson Hughes drove him in with an opposite-field single.
Auburn scored two runs in the ninth, using a mix of singles and walks to load the bases. Morris came in with one out, walked one and struck out two to put the Tigers away and earn his first career save.
Ole Miss and Auburn will be back in action tomorrow night at 7 p.m. on SEC Network.
