Softball Falls to No. 11 Missouri in SEC Tournament

5/8/2024 | Softball

AUBURN, Ala. – Ole Miss was unable to overcome a three-run third inning, falling to No. 11 Missouri 3-1 on Day 2 of the SEC Softball Tournament at Jane B. Moore Field.

The Rebels (31-25, 7-17 SEC) were outhit 5-3 in the low-scoring affair. Brianna Lopez and Makenna Kliethermes went toe-to-toe with Missouri's ace, Laurin Krings. In the end, six walks issued and timely hitting was the difference for the 11th-ranked Tigers.

The defenses stood tall as both teams threatened in the first inning. Jalia Lassiter led off the game with a walk and moved into scoring position on a sacrifice bunt by Jaden Pone, but Missouri wiggled out of the jam. In the bottom half of the inning, Ryan Starr snared a line drive and flipped it over to Angelina DeLeon at second to double up the Tigers.

Lopez was lights out her first time through the Missouri lineup, but the Tigers timed her up in the second and took advantage of two walks and three hits, all coming with two outs to take the lead.

Ole Miss had a pair of hits in the first four innings, a single by Lassiter and a double by DeLeon to extend her hitting streak to nine games; however, the Rebels were unable to get anything going with two outs.

Missouri loaded the bases again in the bottom of the fifth, looking to break things open. Kliethermes held the Tigers in check and induced a flyout to left to escape unscathed and keep the Rebels in the game.

Aynslie Furbush led off the seventh with a solo home run, forcing Missouri to go to the bullpen for its closer. Not giving up, Lexie Brady barreled up two balls over the fence, but they hooked just foul, and the Tigers were able to secure the final outs.

The Rebels, who have a pair of series wins in the last two weeks and seven wins over top 25 RPI teams on the year, await their postseason fate. Ole Miss will tune in to the 2024 NCAA Softball Selection Show on Sunday, May 12, at 6 p.m. CT on ESPN2.
