Engels Ninth in U.S. 1500-Meter Final, Young Jr. Advances in Hurdles at Day Four of Olympic Trials
6/24/2024 | Track and Field
EUGENE, Ore. – Ole Miss track & field great Craig Engels finished ninth in his seventh career U.S. 1500-meter final, while recent senior Ahmad Young Jr. advanced in the 110-meter hurdles at Day Four of the U.S. Olympic Trials at Hayward Field on Monday night.
Engels, who was a six-time All-American during his Ole Miss career, ran his best race of the season, but it came in the fastest U.S. final of all-time. Engels finished ninth in the final at a season-best 3:34.21. Each of the top-eight times, however, would have broken the previous Olympic Trials record of 3:34.09 set by eventual Rio gold medalist Matthew Centrowitz in 2016.
In the hurdles, Young Jr. nabbed the sixth and final auto-qualifier bid in the third heat, tying his PR run on this very track earlier this month at the NCAA Championships. Young Jr. was 21st overall in the qualifying round at 13.46 (+1.8), which ties his spot at No. 3 in Ole Miss history.
The U.S. Olympic Trials will take the next two days off for rest and practice, and will resume on Thursday, June 27. Four Rebels will feature when the Trials resume: Young Jr. in the men's 110-meter hurdles semifinals at 7:01 p.m. CT; McKenzie Long in the first round of the women's 200-meter dash at 7:51 p.m. CT; Brian Williams in the men's discus qualifying at 8:45 p.m. CT; and Anthony Camerieri in the first round of the men's 5K at 10:03 p.m. CT.
