Long, Williams Advance for Ole Miss at Resumption of U.S. Olympic Trials
6/27/2024 | Track and Field
EUGENE, Ore. – Ole Miss recent senior and three-time NCAA Champion McKenzie Long, as well as three-time Rebel All-American Brian Williams, both advanced at the resumption of the 2024 U.S. Olympic Trials on Friday after a two-day break in the action.
This was Long's return trip to Hayward Field after bowing out of the U.S. 100-meter semifinals last week, and she did not waste any time, securing her spot in the 200-meter semifinal after winning the second heat at 22.49 (+0.8). Long still reigns as the world leader in the event at her NCAA winning time of 21.83 (+1.0) from earlier this month, but after tonight's preliminaries she is no longer the lone woman in the world with a wind-legal sub-22, as 100-meter champion Sha'Carri Richardson broke through in the first heat at 21.99 (+0.5).
Earlier this month, Long pulled off one of the most impressive triples in collegiate history, sweeping the NCAA titles in the 100-meter, 200-meter and 4x100-meter relay in the span of just 90 minutes. This was Long's first professional 200-meter race after signing a professional contract prior to the start of the Trials last week.
Williams, meanwhile, punched his seventh career ticket to the U.S. men's discus final after finishing seventh in today's qualifying round on his second-round effort of 62.56m/205-3. Williams has made three straight World Championships rosters for Team USA in the discus in 2019 (Doha), 2022 (Eugene) and 2023 (Budapest), most recently making the World final and finishing ninth in Budapest last year. As a Rebel, Williams was a three-time All-American and two-time SEC Champion, and he still owns the Ole Miss discus record at 65.13m/213-8 from the 2017 SEC Championships.
In the men's 110-meter hurdles semifinals, recent Rebel senior Ahmad Young Jr. concluded his Rebel career with a 20th-place finish at 13.58 (-0.2). In three strong seasons at Ole Miss, Young Jr. leaves as a two-time U.S. qualifier and a 2024 Second-Team All-American, as well as the No. 3 Rebel hurdler all-time outdoors at 13.46 (+0.2) and No. 4 in the 60-meter hurdles at 7.82.
To close the night, fellow Rebel All-American and alum Anthony Camerieri put together an impressive race in the second heat of the men's 5K, taking charge for much of the race before finishing 12th overall at 13:31.41 – two spots shy of nabbing the last time qualifier to the final.
Another busy day awaits on Friday, beginning with two-time NCAA Champion and Rebel sophomore Tarik Robinson-O'Hagan in men's hammer qualifying at 6:30 p.m. CT and followed by McKenzie Long in the women's 200-meter dash semifinals at 9:06 p.m. CT and a foursome of Rebel women in the qualifying rounds of the shot put at 9:15 p.m. CT: Jalani Davis, Akaoma Odeluga, Raven Saunders and Mensi Stiff.
