Track & Field’s Arvesta Troupe Leads Rebels at Day One of Rod McCravy Invitational

1/10/2025 | Track and Field

LOUISVILLE, Ky. – Ole Miss track & field junior high jumper Arvesta Troupe led the Rebels with a career day, one of several strong performances at Day One of Kentucky's Rod McCravy Invitational on Friday.

Troupe – a native of Fulton, Mississippi – won the high jump in impressive fashion, clearing an overall career-best 2.20m/7-02.50 for the victory. That height is the best by a Rebel men's jumper indoors since 2020, it puts him into a tie for third in Ole Miss history indoors, and as of now it puts Troupe atop the national leaderboard in the high jump by three-quarters of an inch.

Troupe is coming off a strong sophomore campaign in 2024 that saw him win SEC bronze outdoors and finish one spot short of qualifying for the NCAA Outdoor Championships at the East Regional meet.

Fellow junior and Bowerman watch list member Tarik Robinson-O'Hagan picked up right where he left off prior to the holiday break, again winning the weight throw to lead a strong effort all-around from the Rebel men on Friday.

Robinson-O'Hagan took the crown at 22.47m/73-08.75, and was one of five Ole Miss men to make the final. Junior Bryson Smith was the runner-up at 20.85m/68-5, and was followed by junior Mason Hickel in fifth (20.07m/65-10.25), senior Costen Campion in seventh (19.67m/64-06.50) and senior Jake Dalton in eighth (19.62m/64-04.50).

In the women's weight throw, the sophomore duo of Akaoma Odeluga and Skylar Soli strung together two powerful performances of their own to finish back-to-back. Odeluga was the runner-up at a career-best heave of 21.23m/69-8, already a foot better than her season-opening toss of 20.88m/68-6 that registered as a massive nine-foot PR at the time. Odeluga's effort today improves upon her place at No. 7 in Ole Miss history, and currently slots her at No. 4 on the NCAA descending list.

Soli wasn't far behind, taking third place after a season-best 19.67m/64-06.50 – currently No. 15 in the NCAA.

Ole Miss had a great day on the track as well, with freshman sprinter Jordan Urrutia leading the way. The Madison, Alabama native shaved nearly a half-second off his prior 300-meter best from his collegiate debut last month, finishing sixth today at 33.71. That time registers among the fastest proper 300-meter performances in available records in Ole Miss history, joining the ranks of a converted 300-yard time from an oversized track by Olympian Tony Dees in 1984 (29.54).

Two other Rebel freshmen posted qualifying performances on the track Friday, with Tarique Wright earning a time-qualifier spot to Saturday's men's 60-meter dash semifinal at a PR of 6.92, while Nyajah Gordon snagged a time-qualifier to tomorrow's women's 60-meter hurdles semifinal on a PR of 9.20.

Ole Miss returns to action at the Rod McCravy Invitational on Saturday morning beginning at 10 a.m. CT, while a delegation of Rebel distance runners will also open competition at Vanderbilt's Commodore Challenge.
