LOUISVILLE, Ky. / NASHVILLE, Tenn. – Ole Miss track & field comes break from the holiday break for a weekend of split squad action, first with the two-day Rod McCravy Invitational hosted by Kentucky in Louisville on Jan. 10-11, and then Vanderbilt's Commodore Challenge on Jan. 11.
MEET NOTES
• The Rebels opened the season with a split squad weekend back on Dec. 6-7, with Ole Miss winning 11 event titles and setting a handful of national leads at the Ice Breaker in Birmingham, while senior Toby Gillen clocked a fast season-opening 5K time at BU's Sharon Colyear-Danville meet in Boston.
• Combined, Ole Miss enters this week with 20 performances ranked within the national top-50, including two national leads in the shot put courtesy of junior and reigning NCAA shot put champion Tarik Robinson-O'Hagan on the men's side (20.30m/66-07.25) and Akaoma Odeluga on the women's (17.60m/57-9).
• Robinson-O'Hagan recently landed on the preseason watch list for The Bowerman, collegiate track & field's version of the Heisman Trophy. A semifinalist last season, Robinson-O'Hagan is the first Ole Miss men's thrower to make a watch list and only the fourth in Rebel men's history overall alongside Olympians Ricky Robertson (2012), Isiah Young (2013) and Sam Kendricks (2014).
• Robinson-O'Hagan currently leads the world in the shot put indoors at his season-opening 20.30m/66-07.25 from Dec. 6 – the best throw by a collegian in the month of December in available records since at least 2008. Robinson-O'Hagan also ranks second in the NCAA at his weight throw opener of 22.88m/75-00.75.
• In just two seasons with the Rebels, Robinson-O'Hagan has laid waste to the Ole Miss record book, claiming top marks in the weight throw (23.62m/77-6) and shot put (21.05m/69-00.75) indoors, and the hammer (74.54m/244-7) and shot put (20.98m/68-10) outdoors. Overall, Robinson-O'Hagan already has those two national titles, eight NCAA qualifying berths, eight All-America awards (six First-Team), 33 NCAA points, five SEC titles, six SEC medals and 64 SEC points.
• Sophomore and 2024 World U20 shot put champion Akaoma Odeluga is off to an excellent start of her own, owning the national lead in the shot put at an indoor PR of 17.60m/57-9, while also sitting fifth in the weight throw at a monster nine-foot PR of 20.88m/68-6.
• The Rebel men's weight throwers looked to be a powerful group on paper entering the 2025 season, and have already proven that right with five currently ranked within the national top-20. Junior Bryson Smith became the second-best in school history behind Robinson-O'Hagan, currently ranking ninth nationally at his career-best 21.16m/69-05.25 from his opening performance last month.
• Also ranked within the top-20 in the men's weight throw are senior Costen Campion (11th, 20.51m/67-03.50), junior Mason Hickel (16th, 20.25m/66-05.25) and senior Jake Dalton (18th, 19.99m/65-7). Hickel also owns the No. 18 mark nationally in the shot put at his career-best heave of 17.85m/58-06.75 last month, good for fifth in Ole Miss history indoors.
• Ole Miss received a pair of excellent opening 800-meter performances in Birmingham last month from freshman Max Armstrong and sophomore Jonathan Stock. Armstrong won at 1:49.65, which not only puts him at No. 4 in the nation but it already ranks him as the 14th-best performer in Ole Miss history indoors. Stock, meanwhile, was the runner-up at an indoor PR of 1:51.79, which currently rests at No. 9 in the NCAA.
• Both Rebel pole vault squads had superb opening days last month, sweeping both event titles amid a series of strong performances. Junior Logan Kelley took the men's crown at 5.20m/17-0.75, which currently puts him at No. 11 on the men's national list. On the women's side, freshman Katie McFarland went toe-to-toe with senior Samara McConnell for the event title, with both Rebels clearing 4.00m/13-01.50 (good for No. 25 nationally at the moment).
• The Ole Miss men's triple jumpers also opened in great fashion, with seniors Iangelo Atkinstall-Daley (14th, 15.05m/49-04.50) and Gavin Nembhard (29th, 14.82m/48-07.50) both entering the weekend within the top-30 nationally.
• Other Rebels currently ranked within the national top-50 are senior Toby Gillen in the men's 5K (18th, 13:30.34), the men's 4x400-meter relay of Jordan Urrutia, Wesley Todd, Caughran Fowler and Max Armstrong (19th, 3:14.88), and junior Arvesta Troupe in the men's high jump (32nd, 2.05m/6-08.75).
