Track & Field Shines on Final Day of Vanderbilt Invitational

1/18/2025 | Track and Field

NASHVILLE, Tenn. – Ole Miss track & field set another current world lead and put together a string of impressive outings to highlight an excellent final day of the Vanderbilt Invitational on Saturday.

Junior and Bowerman watch list member Tarik Robinson-O'Hagan unleashed a world-caliber effort for the second day in a row, setting the current world lead in the men's shot put at his winning toss today of 20.83m/68-04.25. Robinson-O'Hagan – the reigning NCAA Champion both indoors and outdoors – has been steadily inching toward his career-best 21.05m/69-00.75 from the indoor national meet last March, with all six throws today surpassing the 20-meter barrier.

Yesterday, Robinson-O'Hagan also briefly held the world lead at his winning toss in the weight throw of 23.99m/78-08.50 before being surpassed by one centimeter by Iowa's Ryan Johnson (24.00m/78-9). On the weekend alone, Robinson-O'Hagan put up an incredible combined distance of 44.82 meters.

Junior Mason Hickel joined Robinson-O'Hagan in the top-five of the invitational shot put, finishing fourth at 17.82m/58-05.75.

In the women's invite shot put, All-American sophomore Mensi Stiff had her best performance of the young season, finishing runner-up and taking top-collegian honors at a season-best 16.59m/54-05.25 (NCAA No. 18). Fellow sophomore Akaoma Odeluga was sixth at 15.72m/51-7, while Rebel alum and two-time NCAA Champion Jalani Davis took the crown at 17.48m/57-04.25.

Ole Miss received a handful of other excellent performances across the field events, including an impressive victory by senior transfer Dieusi Armand in the women's triple jump. The Hampton transfer leapt beyond the 41-foot plateau twice, with her sixth and final registering a victorious 12.57m/41-3. That distance stands as an indoor career-best for the senior, it currently ranks 20th in Division I, and it already moves her up to sixth in Ole Miss history indoors – the best jump by a Rebel since 2018.

Two Rebel freshmen had great days in the triple jump as well, with Madison Martinez finishing fifth and leaping a PR 12.25m/40-02.25 (No. 11 Ole Miss history indoors), with Indya Dotson taking 10th place at an improvement to 11.75m/38-06.75.

Fellow freshman Caughran Fowler concluded a superb first career heptathlon on Saturday, finishing the two days of competition as the victor at 4,824 points. That already ranks Fowler as the second-best heptathlete in Ole Miss history indoors – just 137 points off Peyton Moss' record 4,961 from 2013. Fowler finished at least second in five of the seven events, including wins in the 60-meter dash (6.99) and 60-meter hurdles (8.72).

In the women's pole vault, senior Samara McConnell led a strong performance from a quartet of Rebel vaulters. McConnell was the runner-up at a season-best 4.12m/13-06.25), but the three underclassmen behind her all cleared a career-best 4.02m/13-02.25 on Saturday. On total misses, freshman Lily Beattie tied for fourth, freshman Katie McFarland tied for sixth, and sophomore Mary Cate Doughty finished ninth – all three of them moving into a tie for eighth all-time at Ole Miss indoors.

The Rebels won two events on the track, including another victorious performance by freshman Max Armstrong in the 800-meter. The Birmingham, Alabama native crossed the line at a career-best 1:49.29 – currently good for fourth nationally that also pushes him into a tie for 12th in school history indoors. Senior Marcus Dropik was the runner-up at 1:49.88 (NCAA No. 9), his first full 800 of the season. Junior Cade Flatt took sixth in his 800 debut at 1:51.21 (NCAA No. 20).

Armstrong also ran anchor behind Carson Turner, Jonathan Stock and Flatt on the Ole Miss 4x400-meter relay that finished fifth at 3:13.37. That time is a season-best for the Rebel 4x400 squads, and it ranks as the best time at Ole Miss since 2020.

Sophomore Sophie Baumann opened her season in strong fashion, winning the women's mile at a career-best 4:40.62 that ranks her third in Ole Miss history. Senior Beth Arentz hopped into the top-10 list as well after her sixth-place time of 4:47.04, good for No. 9 in program history.

Junior Gabe Scales also joined the all-time Rebel ranks in the men's mile, just narrowly missing the sub-four barrier while finishing third at a career-best 4:00.32 (No. 14 Ole Miss history).

Ole Miss track & field will take next week off before an important test at the high-caliber Razorback Invitational, run at the University of Arkansas on January 31 and February 1.
