SERIES HISTORY
The Rebels and Patriots are playing for the second time ever, as Ole Miss claimed victory in the inaugural matchup in the 2020-21 season. The Rebels had a dominant 30-point victory over the Patriots which solidified their first perfect nonconference schedule in program history. The Rebels went 6-0 in the shortened 2020-21 season due to the global COVID-19 pandemic.
In their lone game to this point, the Rebels allowed the eighth fewest points in a game in program history, which stemmed from allowing 11 points in the first half. That total is tied for the seventh fewest in a single half in program history. Madison Scott had a dynamic game as a freshman, scoring seven points and bringing in a team-high nine rebounds.
SCOUTING THE PATRIOTS
Under Vanessa Blair-Lewis, George Mason made history in the 2024-25 season by capturing its first-ever Atlantic 10 Tournament championship and secured its inaugural NCAA Tournament berth. The Patriots went 27-6 overall with a 14-4 mark in conference play. Their season ended in the first round of the tournament at the hands of Florida State.
This year, Blair-Lewis' fifth at the helm, the Patriots are off to a 4-2 start entering the Coast 2 Coast Classic tournament. The Patriots were picked to finish second in the A-10 Preseason Poll.
Zahirah Walton has been the catalyst behind George Mason's success in recent seasons. Last year, she was a First Team All-Conference and All-Defensive Team player and was named the Most Outstanding Player of the 2025 A-10 Tournament. She's picked up where she left off this season, averaging 20.8 points, 7.7 rebounds and 2.2 steals per game. She's shooting 45.5 percent from the field, which is top 10 in the Atlantic 10, and already has three games north of 20 points this season. She's currently top 15 in the nation in points scored with 125 through only six games.
Next to Walton is fellow Becky Hammon Player of the Year Preseason Watchlist recipient, Kennedy Harris. The junior, who has spent her whole career with George Mason, is the team's best deep-threat shooter, firing a .368 clip from 3-point range. In the post, MJ Johnson is averaging 6.3 rebounds per game on top of 8.5 points per game.
GAMES AGAINST THE ATLANTIC TEN
Ole Miss is less familiar with the Atlantic 10 conference, but more successful. The Rebels are 9-2 overall against A-10 foes in their 51-year history. Ole Miss has faced 10 members of the 14-team conference, with Dayton being the only member of the conference to be played twice (both wins). George Mason is set to become the second member of the conference Ole Miss has faced twice. Ole Miss most recently faced an A-10 school when it played Dayton in 2022, a 63-50 victory for the Rebels. Ole Miss' most recent loss to an A-10 foe was in 2017 against Saint Louis.
FIRST WIN IN FLORIDA
Defense headlined No. 13/13 Ole Miss women's basketball's 65-56 victory over Wisconsin in game one of the Coast 2 Coast Classic in Daytona Beach, Florida, on Friday evening.
The Rebels are undefeated through six games for the second time under head coach Yolett McPhee-McCuin and for the first time since 2020-21. McPhee-McCuin joins former head coach Ron Aldy as the only coaches in the 21st century to lead the Rebels to 6-0 starts multiple times. Her, Aldy and Van Chancellor are the only Ole Miss women's basketball coaches to lead their teams to that mark multiple times in program history. Ole Miss has only begun a season undefeated through six games 14 times in its 51-year history.
More history came individually for the Rebels as Christeen Iwuala and Cotie McMahon became the first players since the 2020-21 season to begin a year with at least 10 points through the first six games of a season, scoring 20 and 11 points, respectively. Additionally, they are the first Rebel duo to record double-digits through six games in the 21st century and the first since at least the 1998-99 season to do so. Iwuala also led the Rebels in rebounds for the second consecutive game, hauling in eight boards.
Kaitlin Peterson had another solid outing for the Rebels off the bench, scoring 12 points, grabbing five rebounds and hounding four steals. The senior has recorded at least 10 points per game in the past two outings, as well as having 11 steals in the same span. Peterson went 10-10 from the free throw line, becoming the first Rebel since Kennedy Todd-Williams (who also wore No. 3) to make double-digit free throws in a game. Todd-Williams accomplished her feat last season against Auburn on Jan. 2.
