OLE MISS VS. VANDERBILT
This game is the 57th matchup between Ole Miss and Vanderbilt. The Commodores lead the series, which dates to 1978, 35-21. The Rebels are on a four-game winning streak in the series, which is the longest run of victories for Ole Miss in the series history.
This is the second game of the season between the two teams, the first of which saw Ole Miss claim an 87-59 victory in Oxford. It's the Rebels' most impressive win in series history, with 87 points being the highest they've scored against the Commodores and the 28-point gap being the widest margin of victory. The Rebels held the Commodores to their lowest-scoring output of the season, which is still the case entering Sunday's contest.
A Rebel has scored 20 or more points in each of the past four wins against the Commodores, the last of which saw Kennedy Todd-Williams drop a career-high 25 points earlier this season. Todd-Williams was responsible for 40 of Ole Miss' points that day as all five Rebel starters scored in double figures.
Last season, Ole Miss downed Vanderbilt in Nashville, 67-61, for its third straight series win. Marquesha Davis scored 25 points with six rebounds in the win, as Tyia Singleton added 11 rebounds.
The Rebels have had some memorable moments against the Commodores in their 50-year history. Most memorably, in 1992, Ole Miss defeated Vanderbilt, 59-57, to win the program's first SEC Championship. Individually, in 1978, Peggie Gillom recorded the second-most rebounds by a Rebel in program history against the Commodores, bringing in 23.
SCOUTING THE COMMODORES
Head coach Shea Ralph is in her fourth season at the helm of the Vanderbilt women's basketball program. She has led the program to an 18-4 season and a 5-3 record in SEC play. Last season, the Commodores made their first appearance in the NCAA tournament in 10 years after a 23-10 record. She is 0-4 against Ole Miss in her tenure in Nashville.
This matchup puts together the top-scoring defense in the SEC against one of the top 10 scoring offenses in the nation. The Commodores are averaging 86.4 points per game, good for seventh in the country and fourth in the SEC. Vanderbilt is one of the best nationally at spreading the rock and doing so efficiently, boasting top 30 rankings in assists per game and assist/turnover ratio.
Mikayla Blakes and Khamil Pierre head the charge offensively for Vanderbilt. The freshman-sophomore duo each average north of 20 points per game and are top-15 in the NCAA in that category. Blakes is coming off a 53-point outing against Florida, which set an NCAA record for most points in a game by a first-year player at the Division I level.
Blakes is able to score from anywhere on the court, having made 53 baskets from long range to complement her driving capabilities. She scored 19 against the Rebels earlier this season.
Pierre leads the charge for the Commodores in her second season with the program. Pierre has averaged an impressive 20.8 points, 10.3 rebounds, and 3.19 steals per game. She is in the top 15 nationally in PPG (15), RPG (17), SPG (11), FGs (4), and double-doubles (5). She's registered 11 double-doubles on the young season, her most impressive coming against Evansville, where she put up 42 points and 18 rebounds, both career highs.
Ole Miss outlasted a feisty Georgia team, 63-58, to reenter the win column to close out the first month of SEC play at Stegeman Coliseum on Thursday evening.
LAST TIME OUT
Madison Scott once again had a stat-stuffing evening for the Rebels. The graduate leader dropped 19 points, eight rebounds, and five assists, with each of those marks pacing all players in the game. Scott has found serious momentum midway through the conference schedule, as she's led the team in points for three straight games.
For Scott, it's her fifth game of the season with at least 10 points, five rebounds and five assists. The Indian Head, Maryland, native was a perfect 7-for-7 from the free throw line, which ties a season-high.
STEALIN' SIRA
Sira Thienou leads the Rebels in pickpocketing balls, earning the most steals per game by any freshman in a power four conference, while also sitting third in the SEC and 18th in the nation with 2.95 steals a game. Since the beginning of conference play, Thienou has recorded 31 steals for an average of 3.9 per game.
With 59 total steals this season, Thienou is on pace to break the program record for most steals by a freshman in a season. The Bamako, Mali, native just trails Alisa Scott (1983-84) and Armintie Price (2003-04) with 81 and 76 steals, respectively.
MADI'S MAKIN' NOISE
Madison Scott has proven to be the cornerstone for Ole Miss in its last three games against Mississippi State, No. 7 Texas, and Georgia. Along with averaging 22.0 points, 5.3 rebounds, and 3.7 assists per game, Scott holds a 53.5% clip from the field and has made 19 straight field goals.
Playing a team-high 38.6 minutes in the last three contests, Scott has also been able to handle the ball well, only averaging 2.0 turnovers a game.
