OLE MISS VS. KENTUCKY
Ole Miss and Kentucky will meet for the 48th time in series history, as the Rebels hold a 28-19 record and a 14-8 record at home. Ole Miss has won the past five matchups over Kentucky, including a dominant 30-point victory last season. In what was head coach Yolett McPhee-McCuin's 100th win at Ole Miss, the Rebels steamrolled the Wildcats, 75-45.
That win marked the largest SEC win on the road since 2006. Nearly the entire Ole Miss roster got minutes in the game, with Madison Scott scoring a team-leading 16 points. Ole Miss got out to an early lead which it would not relinquish, making eight first quarter field goals to Kentucky's two, for a 20-7 lead. Kentucky shot 29.3% from the field in the game and was only able to come away with one steal.
The series has historically been dominated by the Rebels, who won 15 of the first 17 games. When Kentucky is ranked, Ole Miss holds a 9-7 advantage. The Rebels have won the past three games against ranked Wildcat teams, dating back to 2021.
There have been several impressive individual performances against the Wildcats in 50 years of women's basketball at Ole Miss, including Carol Ross dishing 13 assists in the 1979-80 season (tied for fifth-most in Ole Miss history), Susan Byrd blocking six shots to tie the fifth-most in program history in 1993-94 and Tia Faleru draining the second-most free throws in a game in 2013-14 with 15.
SCOUTING THE WILDCATS
Kenny Brooks is the first-year coach of Kentucky. Brooks has led the Wildcats to a 19-2 record to start his tenure in Lexington, which is nearly double the amount of wins Kentucky had last season. He came to Kentucky after successful stints with Virginia Tech and James Madison.
Georgia Amoore highlights the Wildcat roster and is one of the most prolific figures in NCAA women's basketball today. The graduate from Australia scored 43 points against Oklahoma to earn several weekly honors entering this week of competition.
Her name is etched in several active career SEC lists. She comfortably paces the conference in career assists with 817, while having the second-most career points with 2,260. A true point guard, she leads the nation in assists per game with 7.5 this season.
Clara Strack, Teonni Key and Amelia Hassett have formed a trio with good size that has lent to one of the best paint defenses in the country. The Wildcats average 6.7 blocks per game, which paces the SEC and is second in the nation. Strack, the 6-foot-5 transfer from Virginia Tech, leads the conference in blocks with 49, while Key is fifth in the SEC with 38.
All three of Kentucky's bigs are top 10 in the conference in rebounds, which have eliminated many opportunities for second chance points for opponents while opening the door to fastbreaks for the Wildcats.
LAST TIME OUT
Ole Miss maintained a tight game against No. 15/16 Oklahoma, but ultimately fell short, 66-56, at the SJB Pavillion on Thursday evening. The Rebels held the Sooners to their second-worst scoring outing of the season. Additionally, four Rebels scored in double figures.
Starr Jacobs had another solid performance for the Rebels by pacing the team with 15 points and a season-high five steals. She added six rebounds to her stat line and has gotten at least five rebounds in 18 games this season.
WE AIN'T SCARED
Yolett McPhee-McCuin values the importance of playing top-tier opponents in nonconference play and it shows in the NCAA's NET Rankings.
Consistently sitting in the Top 15 in the NET Rankings, the Rebels recently came in at No. 14. Ole Miss also holds the 10th toughest strength of schedule among DI programs in the nation, facing eight ranked opponents and three of the top six teams in the NET Rankings.
144 GAMES AND COUNTING...
One of the most acclaimed Rebels in program history has met another milestone marker, as Madison Scott has officially entered the top 2 in most games played at Ole Miss.
Competing in 144 games and counting in a Rebel jersey, the graduate student will surpass Peggie Gillom, who played in 144 games, for most at Ole Miss.
Along with Scott, Kennedy Todd-Williams has competed in 144 career games, seeing action in 55 games at Ole Miss and 89 with her past team, North Carolina.
MADI'S MAKIN' NOISE
Madison Scott has proven to be the cornerstone for Ole Miss in its last five games against Mississippi State, No. 7 Texas, Georgia, No. 23 Vanderbilt and No. 15 Oklahoma. Along with averaging 18.8 points, 4.6 rebounds, and 3.2 assists per game, Scott holds a 53.7% clip from the field and has made 21-of-23 free throws.
Playing a team-high average of 36.6 minutes in the last five contests, Scott has also been able to handle the ball well, only averaging 1.8 turnovers a game.
CROWN THEM!
If Ole Miss had a Mount Rushmore, Madison Scott would be carved into it after she made history midway through the first quarter of the Alabama game, scoring her 1,500th career point on a jump shot from the elbow.
Scott is only the eighth Rebel to accumulate that many points, all while at Ole Miss. Overall, she's the 11th player to score their 1,500th career point in Oxford.
Joining Scott on the grand and a half list is Kennedy Todd Williams, who secured her 1,500th career point against Texas to become the 12th player in Ole Miss history to achieve the feat.
Both Rebels will be honored for their impressive milestone prior to the Rebels' matchup against the Wildcats.
