Track & Field Opens Day One of Ole Miss Classic with Three Event Wins

3/21/2025 | Track and Field

OXFORD, Miss. – Ole Miss track & field opened its outdoor season in solid fashion with three event wins on the first day of the 2025 Ole Miss Classic on Friday.

Friday's action – which began in the morning with a dedication ceremony for the newly-christened Prefontaine Stadium thanks to a generous gift from Ole Miss supporters Debbie and Andy Prefontaine – ended with a dominant women's steeplechase competition in the twilight.

Three Rebel women lead the race, with junior Hannah Ielfield winning at a career-best 10:15:94  – which ranks fourth in Ole Miss history and currently leads the NCAA ranks at this early point of the outdoor season. Senior Ainhoa Brea followed closely behind with a career-best at 10:20.76, ranking her fifth in Ole Miss history behind Ielfield. Senior Emilia Mikszuta finished in third at 10:26.93, less than a second off her PR that ranks her No. 8 in Ole Miss history. Currently, all three Ole Miss women own the top three times in the NCAA.

In the McConnell Family Women's Pole Vault, freshman Lily Beattie won in her first outdoor meet at 4.07m/13-04.25, already putting her into a tie for eighth in Ole Miss history outdoors. Fellow freshman Katie McFarland cleared that same height for an overall PR and took second on total misses, also tying her with Beattie for No. 8 in the Rebel record books.

Sophomore Aly Francolini and freshman Katelyn Hulsey tied for fifth after they both cleared 3.72m/12-02.50, which ranks 15th in Ole Miss history outdoors.

In the men's hammer, the Rebel men found success with all five advancing to the finals and three finishing at the top of the competition. Senior Jake Dalton – a returning national qualifier in the hammer – won the competition at his debut of 67.62m/221-10 that currently ranks fifth nationally. Junior Bryson Smith followed as the runner-up in his Ole Miss outdoor debut with a career-best heave of 67.47m/221-04, which ranks him sixth in the NCAA rankings this season and fourth in Ole Miss history.

Junior Mason Hickel was third at 63.12m/207-01, while senior Costen Campion took sixth at  58.23m/191-00 and sophomore Keegan Wilfawn was eighth at a career-best 54.83m/179-10.

In the women's hammer, sophomore Skylar Soli finished first among collegiate athletes and third overall at her season debut of 61.94m/203-02 – which currently leads the SEC and ranks second nationally. Soli finished behind American record holder and three-time Olympian DeAnna Price at a U.S.-leading 73.18m/240-01, as well as two-time NCAA Champion and Ole Miss alum Jalani Davis at 69.60m/228-04.

Other Rebel athletes with notable performances on Friday included senior Iangelo Atkinstall-Daley in the men's long jump (second, 7.26m/23-10, +0.8), freshman Samuel Ferguson in the men's 3000-meter steeplechase (second, 9:26.38) and senior Abigail Green in the women's javelin (second, 42.33m/138-10).
