Track & Field Closes Regular Season at LSU Invite
5/2/2025 | Track and Field
BATON ROUGE, La. – Ole Miss track & field closes the regular season with a trip down to Baton Rouge for the LSU Invite on Saturday, a key final test against conference competition before the SEC Championships in two weeks.
MEET NOTES
• Ole Miss enters Saturday with 21 total marks or times within the NCAA top-50, and of those 21 performances, 10 came from two weeks ago at both the Virginia Challenge and Florida's Tom Jones Memorial.
• Ole Miss is one of 10 schools in competition this weekend alongside Alabama, Arkansas, Auburn, Florida, Georgia, LSU, Miami, Minnesota and Tennessee.
• Other top-25 men's teams alongside the 18th-ranked Rebels are No. 3 Tennessee, No. 4 Georgia, No. 6 Minnesota, No. 8 Arkansas, No. 10 Alabama, No. 13 Auburn, No. 14 Florida and No. 15 LSU. Ranked women's squads in competition are No. 1 Georgia, No. 4 Arkansas, No. 8 Florida, No. 18 LSU, No. 24 Tennessee and No. 25 Auburn.
• Leading the way for the Rebel men in the rankings is three-time reigning national shot put champion Tarik Robinson-O'Hagan, who is not scheduled to compete this weekend after making his outdoor season debut two weeks ago at Florida's Tom Jones Memorial in dominant fashion.
• The Bowerman watch list member won both the men's shot put and hammer invitational sections, setting the NCAA lead with a thrilling shot put victory on a heave of 20.75m/68-1, while also tying his school record with his winning mark in the hammer at 74.54m/244-7. That hammer mark ranks sixth both in the U.S. and in the NCAA rankings this season, isolating Robinson-O'Hagan as the lone collegian and one of two throwers worldwide this year to break 240 feet in the hammer and 69 feet in the shot (when including his indoor shot put best).
• Robinson-O'Hagan leads a Rebel men's hammer squad that currently leads the nation in the USTFCCCA Event Squad rankings. Senior Jake Dalton had an impressive showing in the hammer invite as well with a four-foot career-best of 69.72m/228-9 to finish second behind Robinson-O'Hagan -- moving him to third in Ole Miss history. That mark currently ranks 11th in the NCAA and second in the SEC, as well as fifth in the NCAA East Region.
• Junior Mason Hickel also had a career-best performance in the hammer two weeks ago in the open section at 64.06m/210-2, tying him for eighth in school history. Both Dalton and Hickel will be competing this Saturday, as is junior Bryson Smith, who ranks 14th nationally and third in the SEC behind Robinson-O'Hagan and Dalton on his career-best of 69.12m/226-9.
• Meanwhile, the Rebel women's shot put squad currently leads the way in the NCAA with a mark average of 16.62m/54-6.2. All-American sophomore Akaoma Odeluga still holds the national collegiate lead on her career-best 18.93m/62-01.25 at LSU's Battle on the Bayou back in March that currently ranks sixth in the U.S. and 13th in collegiate history.
• Fellow All-American sophomore Mensi Stiff ranks No. 18 in the NCAA with her season-best 17.01m/55-9.75, also from LSU's Battle on the Bayou. Transfer junior Opal Jackson's season-best 15.65m/51-4.25 at the Joe Walker Invite and sophomore Skylar Soli's recent career-best of 14.88m/48-10 from two weeks ago in Florida also contribute to the average. All four are set to compete Saturday at the LSU Invite.
• Odeluga also posted a career-best 65.33m/214-4 in the hammer two weeks ago at Florida, placing her fifth in school history and No. 21 in the current NCAA rankings. That heave marks a 12-foot improvement on her previous career-best of 61.80m/202-9 she set at the Joe Walker Invite one week prior.
• That performance, combined with her NCAA lead in the shot put, makes her the first woman in Ole Miss history and one of only two in collegiate history to break 62 feet in the shot put and 210 feet in the hammer alongside former Arizona State national champion Maggie Ewen. Furthermore, Odeluga currently ranks as the lone woman worldwide at both distances this season. Odeluga is set to compete in both the shot and hammer in Baton Rouge on Saturday.
• Junior Joseph Michel also had career weekend in Florida with two outstanding performances across the 100-meter dash invitational and the open 200-meter dash. Michel won the 200 into a headwind on a career-best 20.91 (-1.5) -- 14th-best in Ole Miss history.
• One day later, Michel followed with a slightly windy all-conditions career-best 10.10 (+2.6) in the 100 invite -- marking him as the fastest Rebel since Olympian Isiah Young in 2013 and the second-fastest overall in the Ole Miss record books (which accept up to the NCAA qualifying allowable 4.0 meters per second wind reading). This season, that time ranks Michel 20th nationally, 13th in the East Region and seventh in the SEC. Michel is set to compete in both the 100-meter and 200-meter this Saturday in Baton Rouge.
• At Florida, senior Drew O'Connor and sophomore John Kendricks tied for second in the pole vault invitational at 5.30m/17-4.5, marking a season-best for O'Connor and an outdoor PR for Kendricks.
• Freshman Max Armstrong and junior Carson Turner found success in the 800-meter in the Florida heat two weeks ago as well. Armstrong finished fifth in the invitational section at a career-best 1:47.68, placing him 12th in Ole Miss history, 38th in the NCAA and 12th in the SEC this season, while Turner followed right behind him in sixth with a career-best 1:47.69, placing him 13th in school history and 39th nationally.
• Freshman Lily Beattie improved yet again her last time out to an outdoor career-best 4.10m/13-05.25, moving her to sixth in program history outdoors. Beattie is one of six Rebel women to clear the 13-5 mark both indoors and outdoors, and her height right now has her within regional qualifying contention at No. 32 in the East Region.
• At the Virginia Challenge two weeks ago, senior transfer Kidus Misgina clocked the fourth-fastest 5K in Ole Miss history at 13:37.29 -- currently good for 19th in the East Region. This came just two weeks after he shattered the Ole Miss 10K record in his outdoor Rebel debut with a time of 28:20.19 at the Stanford Invite -- dismantling the previous record by 24 seconds. That 10K time still ranks Misgina 34th nationally, eighth in the East Region and fifth in the SEC.
• Fellow senior Toby Gillen's 5K of 13:26.92 from Stanford -- which narrowly missed the Ole Miss record -- also still ranks highly, currently sitting at No. 12 in the NCAA, No. 4 in the East Region and third in the SEC. Both Misgina and Gillen have this week off to prepare for the conference championship.
• At Virginia, senior Beth Arentz shaved 14 seconds off her career-best from the Stanford Invite earlier this season with a PR of 16:02.45. She ranks sixth in school history and 12th in the SEC, and this weekend at LSU she will shift to the 1500-meter alongside junior Sophie Baumann and freshman Ella Johnson.
• All-American junior Arvesta Troupe will sit this week out, but continues rank in the NCAA top-10 with his outdoor personal-best of 2.20m/7-02.50 in the high jump. Troupe currently sits at ninth nationally, fourth in the East and second the SEC, and he is one of four Rebel men all-time to reach 7-foot-2 both indoors and outdoors.
• Sophomore Lizzie Hatton's all-conditions career-best in the long jump from the Joe Walker Invite of 6.34m/20-09.75 (+2.9) still sits within the national top-25 at No. 23, as well as ninth in the East and fifth in the conference. That distance tied her for fourth in school history and was the furthest by a Rebel since 2010.
• Senior Dieusi Armand climbed up the rankings in the triple jump as well at the Joe Walker Invite with an all-conditions career-best leap of 13.02m/42-08.75 (+2.2). That jump ranks her second in Ole Miss history, as well as 26th in the NCAA and sixth in the SEC this season. Armand is one of only three Rebel women to leap 42-feet outdoors along with Olympian Brittney Reese and freshman Madison Martinez -- who ranks third all-time at Ole Miss in addition to 40th nationally this season at her career-best 12.92m/42-04.75 (+0.0) from LSU back in March.
• Other Rebels currently within their respective spots in the NCAA top-50 are: junior Mason Hickel in the shot put (43rd, 18.52m/60-09.25); sophomore Skylar Soli in the women's hammer (37th, 61.94m/203-2); and junior Logan Kelley in the men's pole vault (50th, 5.28m/17-3.75).
