Children's of Mississippi Kid Coach: Evan Renfroe

3/26/2026 | Baseball

Kid Coach is a partnership between Children's of Mississippi and the Ole Miss Rebels to salute pediatric patients. Their inspirational stories remind us just how truly courageous these young people are.

This week's Children's of Mississippi Kid Coach is Evan Renfroe of Lena.

17-year old Evan was born with spina bifida myelomeningocele, the most common and severe type of the disease. For children born with this condition, the spinal cord protrudes through an opening in the back. It can cause a range of symptoms, including paralysis of the legs.

Although he was born in another state, Evan came to Children's of Mississippi when he was 3 months old, and over 17 years of care, he has formed many special memories and connections with staff, nurses, doctors and other families in the program.

Evan truly has had multidisciplinary care, seeing pediatric specialists in neurosurgery, urology, ophthalmology, orthotics, PICU, physical therapy and many others. He will return to Children's of Mississippi later this summer for hip surgery, and then for continuing follow-up until he transfers to adult care for spina bifida in a few years.

Right now, Evan is doing well, despite a rough 2025. That doesn't slow him down, though. He loves all things music and outdoors, especially hunting. And he plays wheelchair basketball for the Mississippi Wheelcats!

Have fun at Saturday's game, Evan. Your friends at Children's of Mississippi are cheering for you!
