Baseball Bests Arizona State in 14-inning Marathon
5/30/2026 | Baseball
LINCOLN, Neb. – After a 14-inning marathon, Ole Miss' 18th-ranked baseball team outlasted No. 22 Arizona State, 7-6, Friday evening in the first round of the Lincoln regional of the NCAA Tournament.
With the win, the Rebels (37-21) will face host No. 13 Nebraska on Saturday at 7 p.m. CT.
Ole Miss' power-hitting duo of Judd Utermark and Tristan Bissetta knocked a home run each in this game, both providing early sparks to the Rebel offense. Hayden Federico provided a career-high four hits, including a double and a single in the final inning to load the bases.
Will Furniss, Dom Decker and Brayden Randle added solid support with two hits apiece. Furniss knocked a two-run double in the third, Decker reached safely four times, and Randle would be the hero with his seventh game-sealing at-bat this season.
Hunter Elliott and Walker Hooks teamed up for the first 10.1 innings of the game, fanning eight combined batters. Hooks provided one of his strongest career outings with the pressure on, pitching a career-high 5.1 innings while allowing two runs and only two walks.
Hudson Calhoun entered in the 10th inning and earned the win. He worked 3.2 innings in clutch time, fanning a trio and working efficiently. With the win, he improved to 4-3 on the year.
Arizona State hung two runs on Ole Miss in the first, but Utermark responded in the next half of the inning with a solo shot to right center. Utermark's home run made him the first Rebel in program history to hit 50 career homers.
After a silent second, Arizona State tacked on a third run to its score with a solo home run of its own.
However, Ole Miss was prepared to respond with a four-run stretch in its half of the inning. Tate Sirmans started with a single, followed by a walk from Decker. Furniss drove the pair home with his 12th double of the season, after which Bissetta gave the Rebels their first lead of the game with a deep homer down the rightfield line. Ole Miss flipped the switch as it held a 5-3 lead going into the fourth inning.
Ole Miss kept applying pressure by upping its lead in the fourth. Austin Fawley reached on a walk and advanced to second after a wild pitch two at-bats later. Decker then sent him home with a sharp single between the first and second basemen to supply the Rebels a 6-3 lead.
The Sun Devils answered with a run in the fifth to reduce the Rebel lead to two, followed by tying the game at six each with a two-run homer in the top of the seventh.
A miniature pitcher's duel ensued between Hooks and the Arizona State pitching staff through the ninth. Neither team allowed a run en route to extra innings.
That pitcher's duel continued in extra innings. Hooks maintained his composure after a leadoff 10th inning single from Arizona State, initiating a 1-6-3 double play in the following at-bat. The next batter flied to Bissetta to close the Sun Devils half of the 10th.
Calhoun entered with an out in the 11th and maneuvered around the top of Arizona State's lineup, culminating in a strikeout to get out of the inning. He kept the Sun Devil batters at bay for long enough to allow the Rebel offense to take advantage.
In the 14th, Luke Romine and Bissetta walked in consecutive at-bats, paving way for Federico to keep with his hot hitting. The sophomore outfielder made contact on his fourth consecutive at-bat for hit No. 4 of the evening, loading the bases for the eventual game-winning run. Randle, who has been clutch all season, blooped a single to shallow right to drive Romine home.
After a brief break, Ole Miss will face No. 13 Nebraska on Saturday with first pitch slated for 7 p.m. CT.
