McLENNAN COMMUNITY COLLEGE; 2:00 P.M. CST
The Ole Miss Rebels (0-0) will open their 1999 baseball season Friday in Waco, Texas against the No. 25 Baylor Bears (2-3), in the first game of a three-game weekend series. Friday and Saturday's games are set for 2:00 p.m., and Sunday's series-finale is scheduled for 1:00 p.m. All three games of the series will be played at McLennan Community College in Waco, as construction on Baylor's Ferrell Field will not be completed.
SCOUTING THE BAYLOR BEARS
Baylor (2-3) opened its season last weekend with a three-game series at preseason No. 2 Long Beach State. The Bears then played a two-game set with NE Louisiana, Tuesday and Wednesday in Monroe, La. Baylor dropped two of three at Long Beach, with all three games decided by a run, and split its two games with NE Louisiana. The Bears took the series-opener against the 49ers, 3-2, by rallying for two runs in the top of the ninth. RHP Jason Jennings pitched five solid innings, allowing one earned run and striking out nine, and LHP Mark Outlaw tossed four innings of scoreless relief to earn the win. Long Beach then rebounded to take the next two games by scores of 7-6 and 6-5. After losing 15-4 to NE Louisiana on Wednesday, the Bears rebounded for a 2-0 win on Thursday. Jennings tossed a one-hitter and struckout nine to record the win. The Bears return five position starters and four pitchers from last year's team that 41-20-1 and advanced to the NCAA Tournament.
SERIES NOTES
This weekend's series will mark the first time that Ole Miss and Baylor have met on the baseball diamond. However, the two schools have met once each in the sports of men's basketball, women's basketball and football. Baylor defeated the Rebels in men's hoops, 132-113, in their only meeting back in 1971 in a game played in Charleston, S.C. The Lady Rebel basketball team defeated Baylor in the only meeting between the two schools, 72-66 in a tournament at Hattiesburg, Miss. in 1995. On the gridiron, the Bears won the only meeting, 20-10, back in 1975 in Waco.
