Ole Miss to Host Vanderbilt this Weekend

OXFORD, Miss. -- Saturday's Ole Miss-Vanderbilt baseball game has been moved back from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. to avoid conflict the Grove Bowl, the annual spring football game. The football game is set for 1 p.m. at Vaught-Hemingway Stadium.

The Rebels and Commodores will play three games over the weekend starting Friday night at 7 p.m. at Oxford-University Stadium/Swayze Field.

Ole Miss comes into the series at 21-19 on the year and 6-11 in the Southeastern Conference, trailing Georgia and Tennessee by a half-game for the final wild card position for the SEC Tournament, May 13-17 in Birmingham, Ala.

The Rebels hit four home runs on Wednesday to defeat Southern Mississippi 15-7 and earn a split of the two-game series. The four home runs moved the Rebels' season total to 70, breaking the school single-season record of 66 set back in 1977.

Senior Jason Huisman hit his 17th and 18th home runs of the year in Wednesday's game to break David Dellucci's Ole Miss single-season record of 17 set in 1995. Huisman is also closing in on Dellucci's single-season RBI mark of 63, also set in 1995. Huisman has tallied 59 RBIs this season and is also leading the Rebel regulars in hitting with a .390 average.

Vanderbilt enters this weekend's series with Ole Miss 22-16 overall and is in sixth-place in the SEC Eastern Division with a 4-14 conference mark. The Commodores have won three- straight, defeating LSU 8-7 last Sunday and scoring a pair of mid-week wins over Evansville Tuesday and Wednesday.

Junior outfielder Clint Johnston is leading the Commodores in hitting with a .424 average and also has driven in a team-high 56 runs. Johnston is also tied for the team-lead in home runs with senior outfielder Josh Adeeb at 15. Adeeb is also hitting .367 and has knocked in 49 runs.

Sophomore right-hander Jeff McAvoy is scheduled to start Friday's series-opener for Ole Miss. McAvoy is 3-5 with a 6.59 ERA after suffering a loss in his previous start against Florida last Friday night in Gainesville. The Commodores are scheduled to counter with sophomore right-hander Matt Kata. Kata is 1-0 with a 6.75 ERA in five appearances and one start.
