BURLINGTON, Vt. - Junior guard Sherika Wright scored 20 points on 7-of-8 from the field to lead the Ole Miss women's basketball team to a 91-62 win over Radford University in the first round of the Vermont Howard Bank Classic, Friday.
Wright scored 17 of her 20 points in the first half as the Lady Rebels led by 10 (45-35) at the break. Ole Miss led by double digits with 14:03 to go in the first half, but Radford's Catrice Horton scored eight of her 18 points as the Highlanders tied the game at 21-21 with 10:34 left in the half. That was as close it would get the rest of the night.
"It is good to get off to a solid start," head coach Ron Aldy said. "We played a little tentative in the first half, probably due to first game jitters. We settled down in the second half. Sherika played with a lot of intensity and fire. She provided a spark for us both offensively and defensively."
Lady Rebel senior Becky Myatt nailed a three-pointer at the 15:18 mark in the second half to put Ole Miss up by 20 and they never looked back. Myatt's three pointer kept alive a streak of 168 games that the Lady Rebels have hit at least one three-pointer.
Junior Von Kirk and sophomore Kayla Madewell added 12 points apiece and junior TaShondrea Moton chipped in 10. Madewell led the team in rebounding with eight boards as the Lady Rebels out-rebounded Radford 45-35. Moton had a solid all-around game with five rebounds, two assists and two steals. Kirk tallied five rebounds, three assists and four steals to go along with her 12 points.
Ole Miss shot 45.5 percent from the floor, while holding Radford to 39.2. The Lady Rebels shot 75.7 percent from the charity stripe and 20.0 percent from behind the arc. The Highlanders were led by Horton's 18 points and Amanda Neby, who added 10.
Freshman forward Tywanna Inmon was the only Lady Rebel that did not see action in the game. She is nursing a hamstring, but will hopefully be ready to go for the championship game according to Aldy.
"We were fortunate to be able to rest her another day, because we know we will need her for Saturday's game," Aldy said. "With us being thin at the post and if Saundra (Jackson) gets in foul trouble like she did tonight, we will have to have Tywanna."
The Lady Rebels will meet the winner of the Vermont/Lafayette game Saturday at 4:00 p.m. in the championship game. They will be going for their 35th tournament title.
