OXFORD, Miss. - Junior Von Kirk tied her career-high with 19 points on 7-of-12 shooting to lead the Ole Miss women's basketball team (7-0) to a 72-53 win over Middle Tennessee Wednesday night in Tad Smith Coliseum. The Lady Raiders drop to 3-2 on the season.
"We feel very fortunate to win this game," Ole Miss head coach Ron Aldy said.? "We didn't play consistent for 40 minutes, but we are pleased to get the win.? We had some missed? assignments on defense.? Our goal was to stop penetration.? We did that, and that proved to be the? margin in the game."
The two teams battled early, but then the Lady Rebels used a 15-0 run to take a 25-10 lead at the 8:33 mark in the first half. During that stretch, Ole Miss forced nine consecutive turnovers.? The Lady Rebels led by 12 (37-25) at the half.? Wth 12:10 to go in the game, the Lady Rebels led 48-38 and then Middle Tennessee cut it to five (52-47) on a three-pointer by Mia Parviaine.? That was as close as it would get the rest of the way.
Kirk hit 4-of-8 three-pointers in the game.? Becky Myatt had 12 points on 4-of-9 shooting including two threes. She needs 10 three-pointers to become the career leader at Ole Miss.?? Sherika Wright scored 11 points and dished out six assists, and Chandra Dorsey chipped in 10 points in the win.? TaShondrea Moton grabbed a team-high seven rebounds.
"Von's play was huge," Aldy said.? "Her scoring opened up opportunities for other players on the team.? But, she also hustled and played great on defense.? Her uncanny scoring ability will be helpful throughout the season."
Jamie Thomatis led the Lady Raiders with 15 points on 6-of-16 shooting and also dished out six assists.? Joanne Aluka added 10 points and led all rebounders with eight boards.
The Lady Rebels shot 45.3 percent from the field and shot 72.7 percent from the charity stripe. Middle Tennessee shot 43.4 percent from the field but only 55.6 percent from the free throw line.?
Ole Miss will take eight days off for final exams, before returning to action on Dec. 14 when they host Arkansas State at 7 p.m.
