OXFORD, Miss. - Ronald Gilchrist allowed just two hits over seven scoreless innings and Bryan Daigle delivered a two-run single in the fourth as Nicholls State (2-1) blanked Ole Miss 3-0 Saturday afternoon at Oxford-University Stadium/Swayze Field.
Gilchrist (1-0) retired the last 15 Rebels he faced before being relieved by Chet Chambless in the eighth. Alex Velazquez then pitched a scoreless ninth to record his second save of the season.
Six different Colonels recorded a hit each as they out-hit the Rebels 6-4.
Clint Farrar recorded two of Ole Miss' three hits as he went 2-for-3 at the plate.
Sophomore Nathan Lyons (0-1) suffered the loss, allowing two runs, one earned, on two hits and four walks, while striking out three.
Daniel Bell hit his second home run of the year for Nicholls State with a solo shot to lead-off the ninth to provide the 3-0 margin.
Ole Miss (1-1) threatened in the ninth, putting runners on first and second, but Velazquez coaxed Carl Lafferty to foul out to left to end the game.
The two teams will conclude the three-game series tomorrow at 1:30 p.m.
