Miller Pitches Ole Miss Past Memphis 6-2

OXFORD, Miss. - Freshman RHP Matthew Miller earned his first career victory as the Ole Miss Rebels (19-13) defeated the Memphis Tigers (9-21) 6-2 Wednesday night in a non-conference game at Oxford-University Stadium/Swayze Field.
Miller (1-0) kept the Tigers scoreless through five innings, striking out six while scattering five hits in making his first career start. The Brandon, Miss. native had pitched only four innings during four relief appearances coming into the contest.
Chad Hill and Kris Cox led the Rebels' nine-hit attack. Hill went 2-for-3 and put Ole Miss up 2-0 on an RBI-single in the first. Cox went 2-for-4 with a RBI double in the fifth that made it 3-0.
Jonathan Leicester (0-7) got the loss, pitching five innings and giving up four runs on five hits.
Third baseman Tyler Shelton went 2-for-3 with one RBI to lead Memphis at the plate.
The Rebels return to action this weekend with a Southeastern Conference home series against the 12th ranked Auburn Tigers. Jeff McAvoy is scheduled to start the first game on Friday at 6:30 p.m. at Oxford-University Stadium/Swayze Field.
