OXFORD, Miss. - Ole Miss outscored Belmont 14-2 in overtime to hold off the Bruins and end a three-game losing streak Tuesday night. Junior Saundra Jackson's 15 points and a career-high 14 rebounds led Ole Miss to the overtime and then junior Sherika Wright scored eight of her 14 points during the extra period to lead Ole Miss to victory. Ole Miss improved their overall record to 12-3.
"We played with a lot more intensity in the overtime period," said Ole Miss head coach Ron Aldy. "Early in the game we were very tight. We were pressing the matter."
Ole Miss jumped out to a 13-point lead at the 4:39 mark in the first half before letting the lead shrink to six at halftime at 30-24. The Lady Rebels stretched the lead back out to nine with 18:37 left in the second half and then saw Belmont go on a 10-0 run over the next four minutes to take their first lead of the game.
The lead see-sawed back and forth for the remainder of the second period before Belmont pulled out to a 60-58 lead with 1:21 remaining in the game. Ole Miss freshman Tywanna Inmon made a basket with 37 seconds left on the clock to tie the game. The Lady Rebels then sent Chasity Campbell to the free-throw line with eight seconds remaining on junior Von Kirk?s fifth foul. Campbell, a 78 percent free throw shooter, missed both free-throws and Ole Miss could not get a last second shot to fall down as the clock expired sending the game to overtime.
Once in overtime, the Lady Rebels turned up their defense a notch to force three Bruin turnovers and turned them into six Ole Miss points.
Jackson, who came off the bench for the first time this season, notched her first career double-double, scoring 12 of her points in the second half. Senior Becky Myatt added 10 points, six rebounds and three assists. Wright had a career-high eight assists to go along with her 14 points.
"I just felt like I needed to be a leader out there," said Wright. "I felt much more relaxed and confident in the overtime period and was able to get the job done."
