OXFORD, Miss. - Ole Miss announced the signing of five more student-athletes to national letters of intent to play baseball for the Rebels, head coach Mike Bianco announced Thursday. All five will be eligible for the 2003-2004 academic year.
The five players announced Thursday were: left-handed pitcher Travis Bogue, from Madison Central High School, right-handed pitcher/catcher Tim Dillard, from Itawamba (Miss.) Community College, right-handed pitcher/infielder Jon-Jon Hancock, from Tupelo High School, catcher/first baseman Alex Kliman, from Germantown High School, and shortstop Ryne Porter, from Memphis' Houston High School.
"It's been a goal of ours since we've arrived here to recruit heavily in the Memphis-area," Bianco said. "We feel we've signed two outstanding players from two very fine programs in Alex and Ryne. The three in-state players, Travis, Tim and Jon-Jon, all will help us pitching, but Tim and Jon-Jon will also help us in the field as they are both two-way players.
"I know Tim is especially excited to be coming to Ole Miss, where his dad was an All-America performer."
Bogue, 6-feet-5, 215 pounds, was an All-State selection while helping lead Madison Central to the Mississippi 5A state championship last spring. He participated in the U.S. Junior Olympic Team tryouts and the East Coast Professional Showcase.
Dillard, 6-feet-4, 225 pounds, is the son of former Rebel All-America baseball player Steve Dillard, who also played several seasons in the Major Leagues with Boston, Detroit and both the Chicago Cubs and White Sox. The younger Dillard was drafted by the Milwaukee Brewers in the 15th round out of Saltillo High School, and again by the Brewers in last June's draft following his first season at Itawamba.
Hancock, 6-feet-5, 210 pounds, went 4-1 with a 2.52 ERA last season for Tupelo. He also posted a .351 batting average with four home runs and 31 RBIs.
Kliman, 6-feet-3, 195 pounds, batted .398 last spring with three homers and scored 40 runs. This past summer he played on the Dulin Dodgers' AAU team that won the national championship. He also was a member of Germantown's 2001 state championship team.
Porter, 5-feet-11, 170 pounds, was a teammate of Kliman's on the Dulin Dodgers' AAU team this past summer.
Ole Miss is coming off a 37-19 campaign from a year ago, and the Rebels are scheduled to open their 2003 schedule on Friday, Feb. 14 against Louisiana Tech in Oxford.
