OXFORD, Miss. - Carletta Brown poured in 15 points and freshman Armintie Price pitched in 14 in her college debut as Ole Miss opened the Carol Ross era with a 83-58 Preseason WNIT first-round win over Jackson State at Tad Smith Coliseum in front of a crowd of 1,293. With the win, Ole Miss, 1-0 on the year, advances to face Rutgers in the Preseason WNIT second round at 1 p.m. (CT) in New Brunswick, N.J.
"It was a very challenging game," said Ross. "Not only did Jackson State get great post work from Amie Williams, but the adverse conditions of the clock posed problems."
"You find out a lot about your team in times like this. We found out we can stay focused through difficulties and make the proper adjustments on the court."
The Lady Rebels seemed in control early, rolling to an early 10-2 lead before problems with the game clock caused two different stoppages in play, halfway through the first half. Following the delays, Jackson State crept back into the game, pulling within four at 22-18 with 6:38 remaining in the first half. The Lady Rebels responded with a lay-up by Ellen Buchanan, sparking a 14-5 run to end the half.
Williams kept the Lady Tigers close as she posted 16 first-half points off of 7-of-10 shooting from the field.
"It is tough to slow down a player like Amie Williams," said Ross. "This was a great opportunity for us to get a big win against an in-state rival and advance in the WNIT."
The Lady Rebels took a 36-23 lead into halftime then proceeded to blow the game wide open with a 19-6 run to start the second half. Ole Miss received three double-digit scoring efforts from Brown (15), Price (14) and Genice Terry (13 points). Terry recorded a career high seven steals on the night, breaking her previous high of four.
"It was hard to get into the flow of the game with all of the clock problems," said Terry. "We kept our main focus on our defense. The more defensive pressure we put on them, the better off we were."
Price shined in her Ole Miss debut, recording highs in points, rebounds (6) and assists (4). Freshmen Amber Terrell and Ashley Awkward also saw their first action in the Red and Blue. Terrell contributed four points and six rebounds, while Awkward added two points, one assist and one steal.
Ole Miss won the battle at the line, shooting 40 free throws and making 29. It was a glaring difference to the Tigers' 20 attempts, eight of which were successful.
The Lady Rebels connected on 26-of-72 shots from the field, good for 36.1 percent. They made only 2-of-11 three pointers on the night. Ole Miss grabbed 48 rebounds and 13 steals.
The Lady Tigers made 23-of-67 shots form the field, good for 34.3 percent. They made 4-of-27 three point baskets. JSU tallied 55 rebounds and just three steals.
Ole Miss advances to the second round of the Preseason WNIT where they will face Rutgers. The Scarlet Knights (1-0) advanced to the second round by defeating St. Peter's, 58-40.
