NASHVILLE, Tenn. - Senior right-hander T.J. Beam tied a career-high with eight strikeouts and Ole Miss received home runs from Charlie Babineaux and Matt Tolbert as the Rebels defeated Vanderbilt 3-0 Saturday afternoon at Hawkins Field to even this weekend's three-game Southeastern Conference series. The Commodores (13-9, 2-3 SEC) won Friday's series opener 2-1 in 11 innings.
Beam (3-0) held Vanderbilt to five hits and walked two in 7 2/3 innings to earn the win. He worked in-and-out of trouble in the early innings as he retired the Commodores in order just once while Vanderbilt stranded four runners in scoring position through the first six innings.
Freshman left-hander Stephen Head pitched the final 1 1/3 innings to earn his third save of the year. He allowed no hits and no walks and struck out two.
Babineaux gave Ole Miss (14-7, 4-1 SEC) a 1-0 lead in the fifth with a one-out solo shot, his second of the year, off Vanderbilt starter Ryan Mullins.
After Ole Miss failed to add some insurance runs with the bases loaded and one out in the eighth, Tolbert hit a two-run home run in the ninth to give the Rebels a 3-0 cushion. The home run was Tolbert's first of the year.
Mullins (1-3) was charged with the loss, despite limiting Ole Miss to one run on six hits and one walk in seven innings. He also struck out four.
Seth Smith was 2-for-5 for the Rebels as Ole Miss out-hit Vanderbilt 10-5.
Cesar Nicholas went 2-for-4 for the Commodores.
The two teams will play the rubber-match of this weekend's series Sunday afternoon at 1 p.m., at Hawkins Field. Ole Miss is scheduled to start freshman left-hander Eric Fowler (0-1, 3.48 ERA), while Vanderbilt is scheduled to pitcher sophomore left-hander Jeremy Sowers (0-2, 2.97 ERA). Sowers was scheduled to start Saturday but was held back due to back spasms.
