OXFORD, Miss. - First baseman Bryan Triplett went 4-for-5 with four RBIs and second baseman Kevin Melillo also knocked in four runs as South Carolina pounded Ole Miss 13-2 to even the weekend's three-game Southeastern Conference series Saturday afternoon, in front of 2,452 at Oxford-University Stadium/Swayze Field. The Rebels (26-18, 11-9 SEC) won Friday's series opener 6-5 to snap a seven-game losing streak to the Gamecocks (28-16, 10-10 SEC) in Oxford.
Melillo's three-run home run capped a four-run first inning for South Carolina. After Ole Miss starter Mark Holliman retired the first two Gamecock batters of the game, third baseman Brian Buscher beat out a slow roller to third to extend the inning. Landon Powell and Matt Riddle then followed with back-to-back singles to score Buscher and set the table for Melillo.
Ole Miss answered with a run in the first on a Stephen Head RBI single, and scored another run in the second on Matt Tolbert's triple that scored Charlie Babineaux to make it 4-2.
Triplett put the Gamecocks up 6-2 with a two-run home run in the third and South Carolina broke the game open with four runs in the fourth to build a 10-2 lead.
Junior left-hander David Marchbanks (10-2) worked eight innings to earn the win. He held the Rebels to two runs on 12 hits and walked none, while striking out six.
Holliman (3-4) was charged with the loss, allowing seven runs on seven hits and three walks before being chased in the fourth. He also struck out five.
Buscher also had four hits on the afternoon as the Gamecocks out-hit the Rebels 17-12.
Chad Sterbens went 3-for-4 to extend his hitting streak to 12 games and Tolbert was also 3-for-4 with an RBI for the Rebels.
The two teams will play the rubber-match of the series Sunday afternoon at 1:30 p.m., at Oxford-University Stadium/Swayze Field. Both teams have yet to announce a starter. The Gamecocks are looking for their sixth straight series win over the Rebels, while Ole Miss is looking for its first series win over South Carolina since 1995.
