JONESBORO, Ark. - Arkansas State took advantage of two Ole Miss errors in the second inning to score six runs and defeat Ole Miss 8-5 Tuesday evening at Tomlinson Stadium-Kell Field. With the win, the Indians (21-21) swept the two-game season series from the Rebels (28-19) for the first time since 1988.

Zach Shipley was hit by a Jeremy Zick pitch to start the second and Dusty Sexton followed with a single to put runners on the corners. George Sterner then hit a slow roller that second baseman Shawn Yarbrough misplayed, allowing Shipley to score and pull the Indians to within 2-1. After a Brooks Coatney sac bunt, Justin Glenn put ASU up 3-2 with a two-run single that scored both Sexton and Sterner.

A batter later, Brad Hayes singled to score Glenn and make it 4-2. The Indians then took advantage of Ole Miss' second miscue of the inning to score their fifth run when Adam Roberson scored on an error by first baseman Stephen Head off the bat of Josh Allison. Blake Denischuk capped the inning with a sac fly to right to score Hayes.

The Rebels would close to within 6-5 on a two-out double by Head in the sixth to score Seth Smith. However, Arkansas State would respond with two runs in the bottom of the inning on a sac fly by Roberson and a two-out RBI single by Hayes.

Kevin Cutler (4-4), the second of four ASU pitchers on the night, worked three innings of relief to earn the win. He allowed two runs on the hits and two walks, while striking out one.

Zick (3-5) was charged with the loss, allowing six runs, three earned, on four hits and one walk before being lifted in the fourth.

Hayes went 3-for-5 with two RBIs to lead Arkansas State as the Indians out-hit the Rebels 11-8.

Head was 2-for-4 with two RBIs and Chad Sterbens went 2-for-5 to extend his hitting streak to 15 games. Brian Pettway went 1-for-2 and hit his sixth home run of the year with a solo shot in the fifth that pulled Ole Miss to within 6-4.

Ole Miss will next open a three-game Southeastern Conference series at Arkansas, Friday night at 6:30 p.m. The Rebels will enter the weekend tied for fourth, with Alabama, in the Southeastern Conference's Western Division with a 12-9 SEC mark. Arkansas is sixth in the West at 11-10.
