March 1, 2005
NEW ORLEANS, La. - The Ole Miss men's golf team is just two strokes behind leader Notre Dame and one stroke behind UNC-Wilmington after the first two rounds of the NOKIA Sugar Bowl/Tulane Invitational Monday.
The Rebels' one-two punch of sophomore Kyle Ellis and senior Jordan Dempsey led the way for Ole Miss on day one with two-round scores of 77-70=147 and 73-75=148, respectively.
Ellis' two-under-par 70 tied for the low round of the day with Peter O'Keeffe of Southeast Louisiana.
Ellis will began Tuesday's final round in seventh place, three strokes behind co-leaders Cole Isban of Notre Dame and Johnny Caldwell of South Alabama, who shot 144s. Dempsey's first 36 holes put him just behind Ellis, as he is tied for ninth place.
As a team, Ole Miss registered a 17-over 305 on the first 18 holes of the challenging English Turn Golf and Country Club course. However, they improved that score by 10 strokes for a 295 in the second round to push their way up to third with a 600. The team round of 295 tied for the second-best round of the day behind Notre Dame's 293.
Junior Adam Swope fired a 77-76=153 for the Rebels, with sophomore Chris Rogers right with him at 79-74=153 and sophomore Callum Macaulay one stroke behind them at 78-76=154.
Play will conclude at English Turn with the final 18 holes on Tuesday. The Rebels will look to win their second straight tournament, after taking first in the All-South Collegiate Invitational in Alachua, Fla., two weeks ago.
