TUSCALOOSA, Ala. - The Ole Miss men's golf team finished the third and final round of the Conrad Rehling Alabama Invitational in a tie for eighth place with Michigan Sunday at the Ol' Colony Golf Club. This concludes a stretch of three tournaments in 14 days for the Rebels.
The host and defending champion Alabama Crimson Tide (304-286-291--881) captured the victory in the 12-team, 54-hole tournament that saw high scores across the board due to the challenging course and difficult weather conditions.
"High winds, firm greens and tough pin placements really made it tough for us to play well this weekend," said Ole Miss head coach Ernest Ross. "Our pride is hurt, but we are still determined to continue to improve."
The Rebels fired a 307 on the third day of competition after a first-round 308 and second-round 311, to give them a tournament score of 926.
Senior Jordan Dempsey placed in a tie for ninth after carding a third-round par 72, hopefully beginning a new string of top-10 finishes. Dempsey's 11th-place finish at the Seminole Intercollegiate last week was his only non-top-10 finish of the 2004-05 season.
"I am very proud of Jordan finishing in the top 10 again," Ross said.
Other Rebel scores from the third round included a 76 by senior Lucas Boyd, a 79 by sophomore Brice Bailey, an 80 by sophomore Kyle Ellis and an 80 by sophomore Callum Macaulay.
The Invitational featured five teams currently ranked in Golfweek's Top 50 - champion No. 27-ranked Alabama, runner-up No. 23-ranked Georgia State, fourth-place No. 8-ranked Michigan State, sixth-place No. 34-ranked Memphis and eighth-place No. 40 Ole Miss.
The Rebels will take nearly a month off before returning to competition April 8-10 at the Billy Hitchcock Intercollegiate in Auburn, Ala., before heading to the SEC Championships a week later at Sea Island, Ga.
