OXFORD, Miss. - Sophomore left fielder Mark Wright's grand slam capped a six-run first inning as No. 16 (Baseball America) Ole Miss defeated Northwestern State 10-1 Wednesday afternoon at Oxford-University Stadium/Swayze Field to earn a split in the two-game series.

Ole Miss improved to 6-3 on the year, while Northwestern State had a seven-game win streak snapped and fell to 10-5.

Junior left-hander Matt Maloney (2-0) worked five innings to earn the win, allowing one run on five hits and three walks, while striking out seven.

Second baseman Cooper Osteen opened the game with a single and Chris Coghlan walked before Stephen Head laced a two-run double to right center to give the Rebels a 2-0 lead. Brian Pettway then followed with a walk, and after Jon-Jon Hancock struck out, Alex Presley singled to load the bases for Wright.

Wright then hit a 1-1 pitch off right-hander Derek Cloren 396-feet over the wall in left center to give the Rebels a 6-0 lead and chase Cloren from the game. The homer run was the first of the year for Wright and it was his first career grand slam.

Cloren (2-1) was charged with six runs on four hits and two walks, and struck out one in facing seven batters.

Head finished 2-for-5 with three RBI and Pettway also went 2-for-4 to extend his hitting streak to nine games as the Rebels out-hit the Demons 12-7. Wright went 1-for-1 with three runs scored, four RBI and drew two walks.

First baseman Bobby Barbier went 2-for-3 to lead Northwestern State at the plate. Center fielder Andre Vige went 1-for-4 and hit a solo home run off Maloney in the third to make it 6-1. The homer was his first of the season.

The Rebels will continue their 17-game home stand with a three-game weekend series against the Purdue Boilermakers (1-2), starting Friday night at 6:30 p.m., at Oxford-University Stadium/Swayze Field. Game two of the series is set for Saturday at 1:30 p.m., and Sunday's series-finale is scheduled for 12 p.m.

Junior right-hander Mark Holliman (1-0, 6.00 ERA) is scheduled to start for Ole Miss, opposite Purdue senior right-hander Scott Byrnes (0-0, 0.00 ERA).
