No. 16 Ole Miss Explodes On Purdue

OXFORD, Miss. - Junior left-hander Stephen Head pitched six solid innings and went 2-for-4 with a home run and four RBI to lead No. 16 (Baseball America) Ole Miss to a 20-7 win over Purdue to clinch this weekend's three-game non-conference series Saturday afternoon, in front of 3,715 at Oxford-University Stadium/Swayze Field. The Rebels won Friday night's series opener 14-3.
Ole Miss (8-3), on its first three-game win streak of the season, will look for the sweep Sunday afternoon at 12 p.m. Junior right-hander Anthony Cupps (2-1, 4.15 ERA) is scheduled to start for Ole Miss, opposite Purdue senior right-hander Mitch Pruemer (1-0, 2.35 ERA).
Head (2-0) limited the Boilermakers to one run on five hits and one walk, while tying a season-high with five strikeouts.
At the plate, Head had an RBI infield single in the second to plate the Rebels' third run of a nine-run frame as Ole Miss led 11-1 after two innings. He later hit his fourth home run of the season with a three-run shot to extend the Rebels' lead to 15-1.
Junior right fielder Brian Pettway followed Head's home run with a solo shot, his fourth of the season, to make it 16-1 and cap a five-run inning. Pettway finished the afternoon 2-for-4 and tied a career-high with four RBI as he extended his hitting streak to a career-best 11 games.
Ole Miss out-hit Purdue (1-4) 20-12 on the afternoon, as 12 different Rebels recorded at least one hit. Senior center fielder Miles Franklin and sophomore first baseman C.J. Ketchum also added three hits each.
Junior left-hander Brent Coudron (0-1) was charged with the loss, allowing 11 runs on nine hits and one walk, while striking out two, in 1 2/3 innings.
Sophomore shortstop Mitch Hilligoss went 4-for-5 with an RBI and junior DH John Hunter went 3-for-4 to lead the Boilermakers at the plate.
