Maloney Pitches No. 16 Ole Miss Past Southern Miss

OXFORD, Miss. - Junior left-hander Matt Maloney limited Southern Miss to one run on three hits, while striking out a career-high 10 in eight innings of work to lead No. 16 (Baseball America) Ole Miss to a 9-1 win Tuesday evening at Oxford-University Stadium/Swayze Field.
The win was the fifth straight for the Rebels (10-3), while the Golden Eagles (9-3) had their four-game win streak snapped.
Maloney (3-0) retired 21 straight batters after allowing a lead-off single to Trey Sutton to start the game. Southern Miss wouldn't get another hit or base runner until Jason Lowery hit a lead-off double in the eighth. Lowery would score two batters later on a two-out single by Jody Blount to account for the Golden Eagles' only run.
Left fielder Mark Wright went 2-for-3 with three RBI and hit his second home run of the year with a two-run shot in the second to put the Rebels up 2-0. He later added an RBI double to cap a three-run seventh and make it 7-0.
First baseman Stephen Head went 4-for-5 with two doubles and an RBI, and second baseman Cooper Osteen went 3-for-5 as Ole Miss recorded 14 hits on the night. Right fielder Brian Pettway went 1-for-3 with two RBI to extend his hitting streak to a career-best 13 games.
Freshman right-hander Barry Bowden (1-1) was charged with the loss, allowing four runs on five hits and two walks. He also struck out five.
Ole Miss will return to action Friday night when the Rebels open a three-game non-conference series against Sam Houston State. First pitch is scheduled for 6:30 p.m., at Oxford-University Stadium/Swayze Field.
