No. 18 Ole Miss Avoids Sweep, Beats Auburn 9-1

AUBURN, Ala. - Junior lefthander Eric Fowler pitched eight strong innings and junior outfielder Brian Pettway smashed a three-run home run as No. 18 Ole Miss avoided a sweep, defeating the Auburn Tigers 9-1 in front of 2,478 fans at Plainsman Park Sunday afternoon.
Fowler (4-2) put in the Rebels' best eight innings of the weekend, giving up four hits and one run while striking out six to earn the victory and move the Rebels to 35-15 overall and 13-11 in the SEC.
Auburn falls to a 30-20 overall record, 11-13 in the SEC.
Ole Miss scored six runs in the second inning off Auburn starter Mike Felix and reliever Jared Shore. The inning was capped by Pettway's third long ball in the series and 16th of the season, which moves him one ahead of Stephen Head for the team lead.
The Rebels added three runs in the final three innings to seal the 9-1 victory.
Pettway finished the day 2-for-4 with three RBI, while sophomore third baseman Chris Coghlan added two RBI with his 1-for-3 performance. Head, Mark Wright and Miles Franklin each knocked in a run as well.
Head also pitched a shutout ninth inning for the Rebels.
Ole Miss will host South Carolina next weekend in the final home series of the season. There are no mid-week games scheduled for the upcoming week.
