Ole Miss Gets Timely Hitting, Downs Memphis 8-4

MEMPHIS, - It was a good night at the plate for the Rebels on Tuesday, as Ole Miss (13-8, 1-2 SEC) saw several of its big hitters break out the bats and down Memphis (11-7) by a score of 8-4 at AutoZone Park.
Mark Wright led the Rebels at the plate, going 3-for-4 on the night with a two-run home run to left field, as Wright finished the night with two runs scored and three RBI. Six other Rebels notched hits on the night to help lead Ole Miss at the plate.
Brett Bukvich (3-2) picked up his third straight win as he went 6.0 innings with three hits, allowing two unearned runs, and striking out five batters. Bukvich walked none on the night.
Stephen Gostkowski (1-2) suffered the loss for the Tigers as he gave up four runs on four hits as he walked two and struck out three.
The Rebels got on the board in the fourth with a three run inning capped by a two-run home run to left field from Mark Wright. Chris Coghlan led off the inning with a walk and stole second before moving to third on a throwing error as the Tigers sought to catch Coghlan stealing at second. Coghlan then scored on a double to left from Alex Presley. Wright homered in the next at bat to give the Rebels the 3-0 lead.
Memphis answered in the bottom half of the inning with a rally sparked by a three-base error in right field that allowed Michael Murray to reach base. Murray scored a batter later when Bill Moss doubled to left field, getting the Tigers on the board. The Rebels got out of the inning when the Rebels turned the 25th double play of the season, ending the Tiger rally.
Ole Miss answered in the top of the fifth when Justin Henry reached on a fielding error by the second baseman and stole second during the next at bat. A single to right center from Coghlan then scored Henry and the Rebels moved back ahead by three runs.
Memphis added a second run in the sixth inning when Will Peterson reached on a fielding error at third and advanced to third on a single from Murray. Peterson then scored on a sacrifice fly to center from Moss to cut the lead to 4-2. Bukvich then struck out the next batter to get the Rebels out of the inning.
The seventh inning opened with Cody Overbeck, who replaced Alex Kliman as the designated hitter, doubling to left center. Overbeck moved to third on a sac bunt from Henry and was replaced by JoJo Tann at third. Tann scored on the next at bat when Ketchum grounded out to third, giving the Rebels a 5-2 lead.
Memphis added a run in the bottom half of the inning, cutting the lead back to two runs at 5-3.
The eighth inning opened up with promise as Zack Cozart walked to lead off the inning then advanced to second on a sac bunt from Presley. The Tigers intentionally walked Wright to set up the double play, but it back fired on Memphis as Wright and Cozart executed the double-steal moving the runners to second and third. The Tigers then intentionally walked Justin Brashear to load the bases for Logan Power. The Rebels added a run when Power hit a sacrifice fly to center to score Cozart and move Wright to third to put runners at the corners for Tann. Tann reached on a fielding error by the second baseman on a chopper that allowed Wright to score and make the Rebel lead 7-3.
Memphis struck back in the bottom of the eighth, putting a run on the board off a single to left field from Kyle Norrid that scored Peterson from third. Peterson reached on a double to right center to reach and moved to third on a single from Moss. The inning ended with the Rebels up by three, 7-4.
The ninth inning saw more scoring for the Rebels as C.J. Ketchum doubled down the left field line and was replaced by Peyton Farr, who pinch ran for Ketchum. Cozart singled to left field to move Farr to third. Farr scored two batters later when Wright doubled down the left field line to make the lead 8-4.
Ole Miss continues to play on the road this weekend, traveling to take on the Alabama Crimson Tide in Tuscaloosa. Ole Miss and Alabama will play the first game of the three-game series at 6:30 p.m. on Friday night.
