Rebels Take Series With 5-0 Shutout Of Arkansas

5/19/2007 | Baseball

FAYETTEVILLE, Ark.  Ole Miss (35-21, 16-14 SEC) closed out the regular season on a high note as the 21st-ranked Rebels pitched a  5-0 shutout of ninth-ranked Arkansas (38-18, 18-12 SEC) to pick up the series victory heading into Southeastern Conference Tournament play.

The Rebels held Arkansas to four hits on the afternoon as Brett Bukvich (7-2) picked up the win. Bukvich worked 7.0 innings, allowing two hits with five walks and five strikeouts.

Duke Welker (5-5) took the loss for the Razorbacks as he allowed five runs, four earned, on seven hits with a walk and two strikeouts in 5.0 innings of work.

Zack Cozart and Justin Henry led the Rebel offense as both players went 2-for-4 at the plate, while Jordan Henry crossed the plate twice for the Rebels from the lead-off spot to carry his streak of reaching base safely to 45 consecutive games. He ended the season hitting safely in 26 SEC games this season, including an 18 game hitting streak in conference play.

“This team has been good about responding this season,” said Ole Miss head coach Mike Bianco. “Brett gave us the kind of performance we needed on the mound today against an Arkansas club that swings the bat well and puts up runs. The few situations where he got into jams, he was able to make the pitches and get out of them.”

The Rebels got on the board in the first inning when Jordan Henry scored from third on a wild pitch to Zach Miller. Jordan opened the inning with a single to left before moving to second when Cozart was hit by a pitch. Both runners advanced on a sac bunt from Justin Henry before Jordan scored on the wild pitch and Cozart moved to third. Miller drew a walk before a balk scored Cozart and moved Miller to second. The Razorbacks got out of the inning with Ole Miss leading 2-0 as Arkansas picked off Miller at second.

Arkansas looked to get on the board in the second when Brian Walker hammered a ball to center field that appeared to be a home run, but centerfielder Logan Power went up and snagged the ball at the fence, preserving the 2-0 Rebel lead.

Ole Miss added to the lead in the fourth inning when Miller singled through the left side to score Justin Henry from third. Henry doubled down the right field line before stealing third. Miller then stole second before scoring on a sharp grounder to first that was misplayed, allowing Button to reach safely and Miller to score from second. The Rebels led 4-0 after the top half of the fourth.

A bases-loaded sac fly to center field from Cody Overbeck scored Jordan Henry to push the Rebels out to a 5-0 lead.

The Rebels clinched the win as Scott Bittle and Craig Rodriguez closed out the eighth and ninth inning, respectively, holding the Razorbacks to two hits and striking out four combined in the final two innings.

The Rebels will return to action on Wednesday when Ole Miss will open play in the Southeastern Conference tournament at Regions Park in Hoover, Ala. The fifth-seeded Rebels will play the final game of the day at 8 p.m. against fourth-seeded Mississippi State.
