Rebels Down Vols 6-3; Advance To Tournament Semifinals

5/24/2007 | Baseball

HOOVER, Ala.  The Rebel bats were popping early on Thursday as No. 19 Ole Miss (37-21) batted around in the first inning on the way to a 6-3 win over Tennessee (34-24) in the second round of the SEC Tournament.

With the win, the Rebels advance to the semifinal round for the third straight year and have Friday off before returning to play Saturday at 1 p.m. CT.

Lance Lynn (7-4) picked up the win as he worked 7.0 innings, allowing three runs on six hits with four walks and 10 strikeouts. The 10 strikeouts moved Lynn to 130 on the season and into first on the single-season strikeout list. Cody Satterwhite picked up his fourth save of the year as he closed out the final 2.0 innings to preserve the three run win.

Craig Cobb (8-6) suffered the loss for the Diamond Vols as he gave up five runs, three earned, on four hits with no walks or strikeouts as he turned in only 0.1 inning of work. Lance McClain worked the final 7.2 innings in relief as he gave up one run on six hits with three walks and three strikeouts.

Justin Henry led the Rebels at the plate, going 2-for-5 with a run scored and an RBI, while Jordan Henry went 1-for-5 with two runs scored. Six Rebels notched RBI on the night as Cody Overbeck, Zach Miller, Logan Power, Evan Button and Fuller Smith joined the elder Henry in driving in runs.

Ole Miss got things started in the first as the Rebels plated five runs on four hits and forced a pitching change from the Volunteers. Jordan Henry got things started, reaching on a fielding error before moving to second on a bunt from Cozart and then scoring on a single through the left side from brother, Justin. Ole Miss went on to use three more hits and a suicide squeeze bunt from Smith to take a 5-0 lead after the first inning.

The Rebels added a sixth run to the board in the fourth inning when Miller came up with a bases loaded sac fly to score Jordan Henry from third. Ole Miss led 6-0 heading into the fifth inning.

Shawn Griffin tripled to right center to open the fifth, but was thrown out when Chad Maddox hit a grounder back to the mound and Lynn threw to third for the out as Griffin had taken off for home on the play. Maddox reached on the fielder’s choice. The Rebels then got out of the inning on a groundout to second and a strikeout.

Tennessee broke up the shutout in the sixth inning when J.P. Arencibia homered to left field with two outs and two strikes to cut the Rebel lead in half at 6-3.

The Volunteers cut into the lead more in the seventh as Tennessee got runners at the first and second with two out for Arencibia. After working a 3-0 count, the Rebels intentionally walked the Tennessee catcher to load the bases. The move paid off as Lynn got Yan Gomes to fly out to center field to end the inning with Ole Miss still holding a 6-3 lead.

The Rebels brought Satterwhite in to start the eighth as the sophomore closed out the game for the Rebels and preserving the win. Satterwhite struck out three of six batters faced to help the Rebels to the win.

Ole Miss Quotes

Head Coach Mike Bianco

Thoughts on the game...
"The key to the game was jumping out to an early lead. To get ahead against one of the best pitchers in the SEC is a good feeling. We did a really good job against Cobb."

Zack Cozart, Shortstop

On the team's defense...
"We got off to a great start. Lance was pretty dominant tonight. The day off tomorrow will be good for several reasons. But we'll be throwing our number three guy and the other team will be on number four."

Lance Lynn, Starting Pitcher

On tonight's performance...
"I had a fastball on the inside/outside corner, but the curve helped me later in the game. I struggled a little during the second and third inning so it was good to have a those five runs."

Cody Overbeck, Third Base

On the team rebounding from a regular season Tennessee loss...
"It was a rough outing when we went to Tennessee so it felt good to come back and win tonight. Our last outing against them helped me stay focused during this one."

Tennessee Quotes

Head Coach Rod Delmonico

On the game...
"We made an error and couldn't make a play or two. They had a good pitcher [Lance Lynn] and we gave up too many runs early."

On the offense...
"I thought Yan [Gomes] hit the ball out of here. In most places that ball would have be out of here. We had some pretty good swings, but just could not get many runs off them."

On Lance McClain's performance...
"He gave up six hits over 8-2/3 innings while giving up only one run. I thought he pitched tremendously well."

Tony Delmonico, Second Baseman

On the game...
"When you take pitchers like them you can't make mistakes. We battled back and kept it close. Those pitchers can't get any better than that. We just need to come out tomorrow and not make those same mistakes."

On playing Vanderbilt again...
"They are going to be a new ballclub. They are a in-state rival that will make it hard. We are going to need to come out and hit the ball better to win."
