Ole Miss Drops Final Game To Auburn

3/16/2008 | Softball

OXFORD, Miss. Auburn’s Kyndall White scored on a sac fly by Krista Clyde in the top of the 11th inning to give the Tigers a 3-2 win over Ole Miss on Sunday at the Ole Miss Softball Complex.

White started the inning on second base in accordance with the international tie-breaker rule and advanced to third on bunt by Starr Dorsey. The loss drops Ole Miss to 14-12 on the season and 0-6 in the SEC, while Auburn moves to 24-4 and 5-1 in the conference.

Lauren Rowe started the bottom half of the 11th on second base and advanced to third on a passed ball, giving Ole Miss a runner on third with no outs. However, the next three Rebel batters struck out stranding Rowe at third.

Both teams scored in the tenth inning with the Rebels plating a run on a single to center by Lauren Grill. Auburn plated a run in the top half of the inning on a fielding error by Rebel second baseman Alyssa McGovern. Grill finished the day 2-for-4 at the plate with one RBI.

In the eighth inning the Rebels seemingly had the game won when Rowe hit a fly ball deep to center, but Tiger outfielder Krista Clyde reached over the fence and snagged the ball, dashing Ole Miss’ hopes.

Ole Miss took a 1-0 lead in the second inning when an error by Auburn second baseman Cassie Trosclair allowed McGovern to score from second. McGovern had reached on an errant throw by Auburn starting pitcher Lauren Schmalz earlier in the inning.

The Tigers tied the game in the sixth when Brittnay Scott walked with one out, stole second and later scored on a single to center by Myesha Finney.

Lindsey Perry started the game for the Rebels and pitched 7.1 innings. She did not allow the Tigers a base hit until Finney’s single in the sixth. Perry only allowed three hits in the game and struck out six batters. Becky Nye (6-5) entered in the eighth and suffered the loss. She pitched 3.2 innings and struck out two batters.

Schmalz started the game for the Tigers, but only pitched 1.1 innings. She allowed one run on four hits and struck out two batters. She was relieved by Anna Thompson, who pitched 3.0 innings before being ejected for hitting Grill. Brittnay Day pitched 5.1 innings for the Tigers before being replaced by Angel Bunner (6-0), who pitched the final 1.1 innings for the win.

Next up, Ole Miss will host Central Arkansas on Tuesday at 3:00 p.m. at the Ole Miss Softball Complex. The Rebels will also host in-state foe Mississippi State for a three-game series beginning Friday. Saturday’s clash between the Rebels and the Bulldogs will be televised by Fox Sports South beginning at 1:00 p.m.
